Toyota LSD/ non LSD comparability

Post by bda4130 »

Quick question hopefully someone can answer: I have a ln130 surf, it's got an LSD rear diff and a non LSD front (sassed) I'm thinking about putting an auto locker in the back, I understand that to do this I will need an open diff rather than an LSD. Will an open diff head bolt straight into the LSD housing? I thought I read somewhere that there was a slight difference in axle length or something???

Also was toying with the idea of chucking the rear LSD into the front.. will an LSD go into a front diff, again, is there an axle length issue?Anyone run a front LSD, and have any feedback as to what it's like.. I've heard mixed reviews. Cheers.

You want a 4 spider open diff for the locker. The lsd carrier will fit the front, but depending on what carrier you already have, you may need to change the bearings. Some are 50mm ID and some are 44mm(i think :? ) ID bearings.
Im pretty sure there is no difference in axle length.

as above, throw the lsd in the front, confirm yours is or find a 4 spider open for the rear and locker it.as for axle lengths i have found that when i installed the lsd in the brother n laws truck that the axles were around 3-4mm too long.so when everything was done up the knuckles were overly tight and bound up.sliced 4mm odd off the axles, cleaned up the splines and then things came right
1990 surf 350 chevy jacked up and currently under construction again

Primo. Cheers for your help guys, now if the planets are aligned I'll pull my front diff out and it will miraculously be a 4 spider...

Front is most likely to be a two spider, sorry :-(
