Newbies with Safari y60 LWB Problems

hey guys,

Have a few things I would like to try and sort out on our truck, Shes a 1988 LWB Safari, y60 TD42 Manual.

Problem 1.
Clutch - Problem: Clutch intermittently working
Symptoms - Slowly let out clutch and the squeaks ( has to be in a gear ~ Release bearing ? related or no ? ) , Clutch pedal is sometimes hard and othertimes soft, Sometimes the clutch works properly other times it will not allow me to change through the gears unless I rev match and dont use the clutch. Squeek coming from pedal area when the clutch pedal depresses.

Problem 2.
PTO Winch control - Problem: Control lever inside cab next to gearstick will not move at all.
Symptoms - What more can I say ? No matter what I cant get her to budge, And I cant flick the winch to free spool and pull the cable out.
Is it safe to toe the cable around a tree and put her into freespool and reverse up to pull the cable out ? I dont want to pull it out and not be able to get it all back in.

Problem 3.
Electric Sunroof - Problem : Roof does not close all the way.
Symptoms - The sunroof works fine, There is a bit of rust around it but this does not effect the overall mechanics of the sunroof. As the sunroof closes the metal "Wing" that pops up and down as the panel almost shuts does not close down properly.

Problem 4.
Electrics for aftermarket stereo + Foglights... Problem: I cant find a good 12v live feed under the dash anywhere from around the old radio.
Symptoms : I have the memory/live feed for the stereo and the foglights hooked up to the 12 - 24v converter under the passenger seat, But doing this drains the power when the fogs are on and they slowly dim away. I cant figure out how to get 12V from the battery without it somehow changing to 24v along the way... Is there somthing todo with the earthing that decides what V are received ? Really would like to get this sorted out.

I got a 12v supply from the clock.. everything else was 24. Give it a try. I think from memory my fog lights are just wired to the battery and then to a switch in the cab.

hmmm thanks heaps for the reply... but i dont trust my clock as it is also intermittent, theres a new fuse box wired in from previous owner... Looks to be for after market hubs/alarm/fog lights... Not sure exactly.

Sounds like everythings a bit siezed up from lack of use, Im pretty sure the PTOs on those things are cable activated from the lever so you might want to start pulling the lever and linkage apart to see whats seized up. The freespool on the Saf winch on my cruiser does the same thing, you have to rock the drum a bit to get mine to free up if it hasnt been used for a bit then it comes right, must pull the hub off the end and have a look sometime, I wouldnt be that keen on trying to tie the cable to something and force the freespool might be better to pull it all apart first and free it up and get it working properly before you try something like that

The PTO will be suffering from a lack of use. The control is a cable and you may need to strip it out, clean and Lube it. The other thing to be aware of is that if the winch hasn't been used much it may need to be sripped and cleaned out to aviod it binding up (I am half way through doing this at the moment)

mine pto cable did same thing strip lube and got motorbike rubber boot fitted on lower end filled with grease so now no water or other crap stuffs it up
check vaccum pump to to low vaccum to clutch booster

my last safari had same problem with winch.
as others have said get the cable and linkages moving. The freespool will be working on the winch itself but the drum will be seized onto the shaft that runs thru the drum. only way to free it is to pull the drum off. Strip the hub off and take winch off truck. using a soft head hammer smack the shaft down while holding the drum. It will take a bit to free up and watch you don't mushroom the end of shaft.

As for the clutch problem i'd be getting the master and slave cylinders checked as they my be stuffed. if they are fine then its time for a new clutch.
Feed for the stereo. Best way is to have a 24-12 reducer fitted that is always on. My 10amp one feeds my stereo and amp no problems. Use the factory feed as the acc feed. fog lights i'd just get some 24v bulbs and hook them up same as driving lights.

Sun roof proberly just need some crc sprayed on the moving parts and/or crap cleaned out from around the runners.

clutch problem is sorted out YAY!
Slave master was the culprit. Leaking badly... Almost had no fluid left in the reservior when I went to change her over, and WOW what a difference and wow What a b*tch to bleed!
