Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
Is it not shifting or selecting neutral? The Navaras had two autos (VN gomodore) start selecting neutral. Over the shoulder it goes

Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
yeah it has neutral, in drive (first) it wont shift into 2nd and so on..

no vacum lines no electrics. there brainles which is why we use them. tho the cable down to trans from throtle body broken may do that. check that and trans cooler lines not crushed after that its pretty much kick it out.
side note dont look and possibly fix it for him just calculate 300 in for a trans in the deal and buy it. lol.
bring it around shed after work if you can. the rest of truck is more important than trans

How is going to a series 2 engine going to sort out the trans issue? do you know why we use the earlier trans from the series 1? the early trans has no brain/no electronics. it works by throttle cable input only. real simple. but works fine. vr etc have eletronics that need to be bypassed. i run a vr engine but still use the early vn trans.
your right about the engines tho, serries 2 a much better
Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
got the truck lastnight, turns out my motor is the series 2, have found another trans, will see if i properly diagnose this gearbox first and run some lucas trans shit to see if its sticky vavles.
i have a bigger trans cooler for it aswell, question, can you have a "too big" oil cooler?

We have had success in the past by running kerosene in the box to free up sticky valves, Run for half and hour shifting through all positions then dump and flush then fill with new oil
Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
cheers, will look into it, how do you ensure its all out of the trans though? bloody ATF oil aint cheap either!!

Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
Heres a thought jesse. did he have it driving on that gearbox. maybe he put the later model box in it not realizing it needed the earlier one. check for unused wireing plugs on trans. longshot but quite possible
Re: Holden 3.8 auto not shifting
na had a look, saw nothing, after i picked it up last night it drove sweet for 10mins then started being a c*nt, i thought it anything it would work better when hot?

My mechanic does a transmission flush (Wynns) which removes approx 95% of fluids, normal fluid dump because of valves etc does les than half.
ATF is way cheaper than a rebuilt box

yep best too flush when changing fluid but in my view would buy another trans known to be good and put the new fluid in that. have replaced my v6 trans twice at a hundred bucks each time. new fluid in a dodgy trans is wasted money
