trailer axle question

Hi I have purchased a tandum axle trailer which tows like shit when loaded. On checking the axle centres I have found that they are spaced at, the front axle is 175cm foward of centre and the second is 500 rear of centre of the deck, which is 3800 total lenght. The axles are dura-torques. What is the correct measurment for tandum axles placement?

Checked your tyre pressures etc? 40psi or so... is one of the duratorques naft?? checked wheel bearings? I would suggest its not the axle placement but a mech issue or a load placement thing.

My car trailer has its rocker box mounted at 100mm rear of the centre of the deck (4.4m) Tows great at 120km with 2500kg... when loaded right

Tire pressures correct and all equal

Don't know if this helps but I had a heavy machine type trailer that towed fine behind my car, but crap behind my raised safari due to the height of the ball.

As mentioned, with duratorques is even more important that on a leaf sprung trailer to keep the trailer level as there is no rocker arm to keep the loading on each axle even.

DuraTorques are great for space and suspension units but shithouse for maintaining wheel track geometry when loaded due to the design.

When you tow it in a straight line then come to a stop are any of the wheels leaning in (negative camber) or pointing in or out (Toe in or out) A visual will give you a good idea of the condition of the suspension units.

yep... when the trailer is loaded the top of the wheels are in (negative camber) with weight on only. Also if doing a u turn the front tires almost peal off the rims.

Yeah sounds like the duratorques are worn out or bent.

Also how much weight is on the draw bar? anywhere from 30kg up to 80kg is ok depending on your load and tow vehicle.

Try bump the tire pressures up quite high 40+ psi and then check the weight on the draw bar, may help out.

what weight duratorques are fitted? it may have light ones fitted and your overloading it.

Kinda interested in this as I need to build a trailer for my skid steer and was leaning towards a couple of 1500kg electric braked dexter axles (duro torques) myself. What would be the recommended ideal set up for a 2500 kg loader? Will also be used for the Mutt as a dedicated flatbed is easier than the system I have for it now.

bobcats 2.5t and the trailor once finished will be 0.5t at least so from the word go its going to be overloaded axle wise

dual axle, 3 or 3.5 ton rocker leaf springs. i think for that weight you need electric breakaway brakes. would not touch duratorques for that weight.

When I was looking at building a trailer that size I'm sure i read that duratorques in tandem can be up to 3500kg. May depend on model i guess.
