Tow Hook Mounting, Thoughts/Ideas

Post by 3VILC »

Rite, well since the weather is too poo to actually get in the shed and do anymore making today, I'm at the drawing board with how to mount some rear tow hooks onto my deck (don't think club trips will approve of my current chain around rollbar, ok for straight pulls but no good for snatching)

Heres the space I have to work with:
Image

The lower main rail that runs front-rear is about 50x50x4 box tube, the rear rail is about 60x25x3 rectangle, crossmembers are about 40x40x3 angle (only rough guesses as I didnt build the deck so can only go by eye-rometer measurements :)

This is the simple idea I had in mind (since i have no special engineering tools and like to use things from the junk pile):

Its a 6mm thick bit of angle, will be welded along all seams I can get at.
Should be plenty strong enough right? Probably put a gusset in the center of the angle too.
I know blah blah welded mounts bolt on mounts, but in order to make a place to bolt too you need to weld something in most times. Only direct bolt place is thru the end of the chassis rail but dont like this idea as they dont look particularly strong n dont want to bend them snatching since the spring hangers are right at the end

Yup photo is from above deck so hooks will be bolted on top of the angle pointing right way up level with deck. Just trying to get ready for a weekend trip but the weather doesnt want to play the game :P

Bolt right through the chassis rail and put crush tubes in to stop your chassis being bent - most 4wd clubs prefer this method to a welded on hook

Noone seemed particularly worried about it, seam welded right round its not going anywhere in a hurry. Same old arguement really lol, while we all know not to weld directly to the hook since its heat treated (tho I have seen it done  ), where do you draw the line. Most peoples hooks are bolted to a bullbar, which is welded together, which is bolted to a chassis that is also welded together.. but that arguements been discussed several times already so we wont go there
The tow eye on a truck is welded to the drawbar, which has 30+tonne trailer hanging on the end of it, what happens when you pull the trailer brake trailer is trying to stop while 25ton truck is still trying to go forward I'd say a fair amount of force involved there

trailer tow eyes low hydrogen welded on preheated to required temp before welded, all welds 3 runs lenght wise long hook body none across the body to induce cracking, i know been here done that as a certed welder for domett fualhauf :D
not that i could do that sort of shit now

Other option if your worried abt mount point is put hooks on both sides and keep a 2m tree protector or similar handy. Poke through strop eye then hook to both sides to spread the load.
