as above im looking for a cheap 4wd to tow a 5m/90hp fibreglass boat & trailer. Wont be doing anything exciting just plenty of long trips and hill work. Looking at 3.1 bighorns, 2.7 terranos etc all about the 3-4k mark. Hit me up if you have anything suitable or have any suggestions.
Cheers

because? Gearbox? They seem to go ok but wouldnt want a 5 speed due to the weak box but I thought the auto would be ok? Its not heavy towing, not a huge boat but long trips with hill work so it needs to be reliable and certainly not a toyota 2LT or 1KZ.

Re: Need 4wd to tow boat
My old wagon was a 3.1 bighorn with an auto and we towed the boat (5.7m Mac Craft 140hp), large car transport trailers with cars and 4x4's and alsorts of other things no issues.
We ran it on 30x9.50 tyres for all our road work and 33's off road only as we found that it geared it up to much for road work and towing

I had a diesel turbo manual terrano and it was awesome to tow with. 5.5m glass boat 115hp 3 sets of dive gear, and 5 bods and comment from a toyota driver as we climbed a decent hill was "bet your glad it not diesel" He wouldn't believe it was till I popped the bonnet at the ramp. Yeap the 5 speeds are a bit weak, but only if abused. I had mine rebuilt and the guy used needle bearings and it was a mint box after that and I abused it for about another 100k before sellng it, still going strong. Oh and it towed my 25ft caravan as well as my 4x4 courier
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Re: Need 4wd to tow boat
Ive had 2 terranos and a navara doubble cab. First terrano was 5 speed 2.7 it went good but under powered. Done a lot off 4x4ing in it but no towing. sold it and then gear box blew. 2nd terrano was 2.7 and auto same as 1st under powered but still ok. Use to get hot going up hills. And then theres the rust problem under the rear seat. The navara was a 2.3 i swaped it out for a 2.7 everything was good no problems till towed our old 14ft caravan from Dunedin to Banockburn and it shit the gear box.

cheers im happy with the power of them (unless they are old and worn out) the ones i have driven and the one i have owned (auto) certainly were not race cars but had plenty of power and didnt slow up at all when towing. I would compare them to the power of a 1kz surf but less head problems.
I like the bighorns (for the family) its never going to be my offroad truck so not to worried about big rubber just want something reliable that will not cost me a fortune to buy or run
