Plastic BB'S in tyres
Plastic BB'S in tyres
Have any of you guys heard about this?
From what ive been reading, on larger tyres 33" and up, if you put plastic bb's in the tyre it helps ballance them on the road?
Heres how the theory works:
http://www.dynabeads.co.uk/how.php
Its a great idea in my opinion, but i dont think you would get away with this in tubed tyres.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
on the website it says about 230 grams in a 33"x12.5"x15 tyre. which is about 1200 0.2g bb's each.
i can see where it would be handy, specially in the larger tyres that are harder to balance.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
At what speed does the centrifugal force lose its effect on the BBs and they all drop to the bottom of the tyre and throw it even more out of balance? I can see how this would work at highway speeds but around town or even at low speed offroad, is there enough force to throw the BBs to the outside of the tyre and hold them there?
Neat idea in theory but in reality? maybe not so

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
lol well thats a very good point, luckily i dont work in one and probably never will. i just remember that last guy that balanced up my 33's, he had prick of a time and i thought thats what it was like for all large tyres. maybe he was just having a bad day.
Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
Why bother balancing them. The first time you go off road the balance will be screwed anyway. Just get a good steering damper & stronger arms.
Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
i could see where the stronger arms might come in handy.
im not too worried about it just wanted to know if there was any one on here that heard of it before, i found it on an american website after it was mentioned in a you tube video.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
Google this idea, lots of people use this in the states. You can even use anti freeze as a balancing medium. The 2 advantages of this for me is no weights to knock off and it can dynamically adjust to different out of balance states e.g. mud stuck on a rim after a day out.
I'm defiantly going to try this in my tyres. I hear there's a specialised fluid trucks use in their tyres for this purpose, does anyone know where you can get this from in NZ or what it's called?

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
the only type of liquid ive seen in tyres is that stuff that automaticly seals small punctures......
might have to do a bit of research on that one me thinks
So this is what i found about the anti freeze method, further up the thread they said dont use water cause it freezes.....

i only have 33's so i dont know if this would effect me at all anyway, but to some of you folks out there running larger tyres i think it could be worth it.

This idea works with no weights.
It is not a big deal if you have weights, it should balance out either way.
My 37" Super Swampers are balanced with anti-freeze and it works amazing. I have a little wobble in my front right tire, but i'm missing LARGE chunks out of my side lugs.
1.) Take the valve core out of the tire with a valve core remover.
2.) And insert anti-freeze in through the valve stem with a large syringe.
(I used the kind with no needles, just barely fit in the valve stem.) I put 5 syringes full of anti-freeze in each tire.
3.) Reinsert valve core and air up tires.
If it wobbles, add more anti-freeze.
As for other media;
Water freezes. Probably not a good thing to have in a tire.
Metal BB's rust and stick together, so I hear.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
That video kbushnz put up was interesting.
Read about this on the JK forums, I think it only really applies to larger tire's
In US tire's under 36-37's are considered small so balancing is an issue.
Thought this was interesting that some use 4-6 Golf balls in each tire with great result on tire's over 40's.

"i recently got a set of 36" bias iroks on cheap steel wheels..... i mounted them myself with a big prybar and poured 12oz of copper BB's in each tire...... they roll smoooooooth..... i was skeptical at first, but i'm a believer now!"

Latest mod, pin stripes, hit the same branch I did on the way in on the way out.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
there were some people saying that plastic ones are better, aparently the copper ones "weld" together when moisture is in the tyre, same with lead shot.
its very interesting stuff, i might try it if i get bigger tyres than what i have.

hay this will hepl stop the insides of the rim rusting

on the down side anti freeze is very slippery and not what you want with soft tyres you will punch a bead off real easy

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
There is defiantly a fluid that's used specifically for this purpose on truck tyres, I've found it before on google. Can't seem to find it now though
I don't see why this only applies to larger tyres, it should work on all tyres. It worked on the small tyre on the video at the beginning of the post!

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
well thats true. but my 33's are pretty well ballanced. but if they do become unballanced, i supposed i might try it then..
Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
What about when your at a speed where it isn't fast enough to get the balancer to work then it'd be terrible to drive, a bit like a the tractor with water in its tyres at 25km/h, boing boing boing until you drive through it.

accualy my older brother has a toyota blizzard, and one of the tryes came of in the mud, we got it back on but we couldnt get all the mud out.

Search tyre balancing fluid

Heaps of stuff.
I've balanced 35 creepys with truck weights before. Not really that hard.
With bbs what i would find funny is them blocking a valve when trying to air down or actually fitting out a dump valve and emptying all over a track

Duh, that was simple

Thanks.
Will ask the local tyre shop to see if they can get some in.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
yeh i use dynabeads, have used them for years... the ones available here in NZ are actually smaller then the ones available in the US.
I first came across them when i used to ride road bikes, i still use them through work etc, hardest thing is getting the right amount of beads to use for the type of tyre your trying to balance.

Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
do ya reakon plastic bb pellets will work as well?
Re: Plastic BB'S in tyres
I picked up two bags of Counteract balancing beads today from a local truck tyre outfitter.
will fit to my tyres next day or so and see how they go.
