New Zealand new TJs came with Dana 44 rear ends. As such you won't find many with broken D35s (there are some imports that did/do come with D35c).

Could this problem be limited to XJs then? I don't know enough about XJs (no experience with them).

i think some xj's came with the 44, but not the jap spec ones like most in nz.i will lock mine and see how it goes, will start looking for some spares ,only running 31's, if they are weak what do you put in it's place?.ford 8 or 9 inch will be my pick.

the only problem with the explorer diff is then would have to buy gears for the front diff to match, will look for a d35c to have as a spare incase it breaks when i lock it, in nz is probaly easier to use d44 or 9 inch i think.

I got at Jeep wrangler with the 35C in the back and a Hi pinion 30 up front, running 33” TSLs now on Silverstone’s. It’s a dedicated bush truck; she has also completed probably 10 or 12 winch challenges with no axle issues.
In saying that:
The axles are small light weight thing’s for sure and the yanks hate them with a passion. The weakest link on the rear is the spider gears, you can combat that by installing a locker, and the next weakest link is the carrier itself, so you install the type of locker that has its own carrier i.e. Detroit or ARB. Don’t know about the axles as I never used them, I opted for the “molly full floating” units. My advice; if doing serous off road and you want to keep the 35, do a gear change, on 33” at least a 4.1; 4.56 probably better and when you do that go for a solid pinion spacer rather than the “crush sleeve” The housing can also benefit from using a “truss”.
The problem I see with a Ford axle is they are big, the 8.8 is bigger than the Dana 44, weight is not an issue, it’s just their physical size, they are Hugh in comparison to a 35. As for the 9” the pinion is too low for the drive shaft length if you are installing into a wrangler (in my opinion). They are a tuff axle and you will be going to break one, but in my opinion you will end up dragging its arse everywhere if you use a Ford axle.
In short, a 35 is doable but it will cost a couple of bucks and you will need to drive it accordingly. If you go the Dana 44 way, you still gotta spend the same on a locker but I would think the axles themselves would be ok. If you like big tires and the throttle and rooster tails use the Ford axle.
The “Hi pinion” 30 up front is a surprisingly tuff little thing, again, with molly axles and a locker, no known issues, the only axle I broke was a STD one and that was quite a few years ago, actually I broke the UJ, that in turn took out the axle. I recon you will be going to break a 35 or a 30 on 31s driven accordingly.
My 2 cents worth
