Yeah Bill we came out on the Milltown Rd after doing the Big Wain------ what Smurf said, remember I had two punctures and we stopped while Mike adjusted the wheel bearing on his Surf, then you followed me back to CHCH in case I got another flat. It was my trip after one of Al's birthday bashes in Reefton. As far as I Am a wear the Big Wain---- around Mt Terawattie (spelling) coming out on the Milltown Rd track is now closed as it was always through private land, Christchurch 4WD club had a serious accident at the steep accent up on to the Milltown Rd a few years ago and as far as I know the farmer stopped access.

AND I THOUGHT MY MEMORY WAS BAD,

Is there a track from the end of the totara river at Ross that heads up the coast towards hoki? I have read about it I think, got narrow bridges and might have followed an old railway line...?

If I remember correctly I done this track with Flag around 2008/2009 with a few others from westport and a couple of trucks from grey/hoki. We went a few kms on the grey side of Jacksons and came out at Kaniere. Was pretty stoney and we had to do a bit of work on a few of the banks into and out of the river crossings. The steep bank at the Kaniere end was a challenge. We may have been the only people through there since then? Flag could probably tell you more on how we got access. Cheers marc

That would be it, found 5 trips worth of GPS logs from 2005-08 on the coast, been trying to work out what they all are.

milltown rd is all closed now. Farmer closed all his land off because to many hunters were using it, and other part is closed for maintenance on the dams. i think there is still 1 part open, that leads back to HW 73??? still alot of animals up there though. not many possums though. hundreds of goat/rabbit and the od deer.

Thats a bugger, mind you I did know the farmer up there and my mate did have the contract to service the raceways and dams, so keys for gates werent an issue

What about the road/track that goes from the Arahura bridge up the south side of the river to the start of the big Wainihinhi ?

There is a bluff and lots of gorse up the top after the forestry . Is that still open ?

Cheers Richard

once you cross the arahura bridge, and drive NnE up to the where it splits into 2 ways (next bridge after cattle stop) i believe you can still head up to Wainihinihi. The only road that'ss closed is the one that leads you up into tussocks and dams and to the mine. I had a good yarn to the farmer last time i was there (he's deaf as a door knob) but he said he no longer lets anyone shoot on his land, but he said i could shoot on the other side of the arahura, or once you cross the arahura, go through the gate on your right, follow the mud track along the river, and there is deer/goat down there + alot of rabbits. I have never driven upto wainihinihi, i've always wanted to though.
