FJ40 gets a paint job
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Slow progress on the paint front, lots of small stuff to prime up,but im sure it will be worth it in the end, prep is the key so they say.... getting other cert stuff sorted as well anyway, mainly new seatbelt anchor points in the rear.
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Anybody know where to get rubber flares these days that are wider than the standard 50mm or so?
I have searched a few builds on here but havent really tracked down anything good.
Tried Repco, Bunnings, Rubbermark..... What have others used that doesnt look to cheap and holds its shape?

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Terrain Tamer flares come in 55mm and 75mm. Guy on tradme has them listed NY the meter. Lot more expensive than the edging but look great.

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Ive got 50mm and 75mm at work

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
I got 100mm wide strips from para rubber, the oil, fuel and uv rated stuff.. 6mm thick too. Was $6 a meter.

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
i used some conveyor belt for my flares. could cut it to whatever shape needed and isn't all wavey were screws go in. reckon looks better than those bush ranger type ones
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
So have to change a couple of things for the certifier, nothing to major, more doubler plates on the rear seat mounts and strengthen some trans. mounts.....
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
I cant decide wether to go for the moulded type flare and be done with it, ie. cut to length, or make my own out of rubber strip.
Found some more photos of..... prepping for painting

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Awwww yearghhhhh. Good stuff man. As for the flare thang, why not get some edging type flare and try it on 'for size'? If not a goer, go the more expensive route with flares?

So he wanted double plate mounts for all 6 of the bolts?

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Yeah MNC, the guy im dealing with wanted the plates inside on the six points of the seat, as well as underneath. I originally just thought the RVR seat plates would be sufficient....... but, not enough surface area.

I had the same problem, Wayne wanted top plates too.

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Well after threatening to give up for months, the starter finally croaked the other day when getting ready to do some final jobs to the Cruiser... many words have been said while lying under it trying to shim it, rewire it and finally re-condition the starter but in the end had to do what i didnt want to and drop trans off to fit new ring gear
Managed to get it winding over lastnight, sounds sweet to what it used to, and it is a different beast now...will try get some video of it with its new lease on life

Heres a wee sound clip of the engine running before the exhausts are put on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--NmsojAJrU
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Bit more progress towards road status hopefully, getting some final jobs done that i dont have any skills in, so its taken a trip to the workshop...
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Looking good so far, just be wary of those el cheapo hi torque starters. Mine lasted as far as a little play in some mud puddles, filled up with mud an burnt itself out so I bought one of those big old chev starters 2nd hand for $50 an haven't had any trouble since

Didn't barbie drive a jeep??
Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
Yeah i hear you on the el cheapo starter Fakey, but i just couldnt get the old chev starter to crank the engine over properly everytime, it didnt seem to have the grunt, i got sick of rebuilding the old starter to make it work after doing it up twice. I would like to know what compression the engine is running exactly but i wouldnt have thought it would be that much the original chevy starter shouldve been fine.....

Re: FJ40 gets a paint job
I just want this badly........
