surf under-body spare to rear swing out bracket conversion?
surf under-body spare to rear swing out bracket conversion?
looking for ways to get my spare wheel out from under the truck. anyone know of one of those swing out spare wheel brackets that sit over the rear door being fitted to a surf without one?
Re: surf under-body spare to rear swing out bracket conversi
The Surfs with the factory swing out carriers have reinforcing brackets in the back corner of the body where the carrier bolts to. The non carrier Surfs don't have this.
Easier option in my opinion is to make up a rear bar and swing a carrier off that.
I was going to use a Terrano carrier as it is all square and reletively easy to mount it off the uprights on a rear bar.

What Smurf said. I am looking at making custom rear bumber for the Safari and am going to use a trailer stub axle axle and hub with the flange cut of to swing it on

yep, like how much of a PITA it was to custom make up brackets to support the carrier.

Hosehustlers effort

Thanks smurf, hate searching for stuff,
If u have 33 or bigger just make a new rear bar and put a trailer stub axle to piviot carrier on, get fancy and bulid a high lift holder and jazz onto it on the inside of the swing away.
I got to many ideas not enough vehicles n money

I made up a rear bar to incorperate it.

Far easier to do it that way.
You need to swap to a tailgate that has the mechanisim to make it easy though.

You shouldn't have a spare tyre carrier that mounts to both a bar (chassis mounted) and the tail gate, as the body can move seperately to the chassis being rubber mounted, it is likely to cause damage to your tailgate.

I originally thought the same thing, then I wacked it dropping into heaps of holes, and it bent a little but didnt snap off or actually damage anything, so I kept it for this truck.
It does have the central tow hook to protect it a touch though.

i agree with smurf that you shouldn't go between chassis and body if you can avoid it but agree with t boon as i did and all was ok,it took heaps of hits and the 35 sat well below where it should of.even after my roll over it all still worked and held together.used a terano bar and latch bolted to tailgate with big washers behind...biggest thing i found was the problem was at motor way speeds i got mean vibrations in the back and forth motion due to tyre and body moving in funny ways.if i did it again id look at trying to pin it differently.wont be on this truck again though as im now converting to a ute but here's the pic of how it was set up
