I have a 1980 bj40 diesel landcruiser which i bthink has a lsd because when you jack up the back up the rear end the wheels both rotate the same way but when on wet grass only one wheel spins so i think it is worn out. Would i be better to get a diff locker which type? or get the lsd reconditioned/ fixed
Also what recomendations do you have for converting it to disk brakes all round and where to source the parts from.
cheers mike

Before we go reassembling the diffs, would it be worth checking the torque/clutch setting on the LSD? i have read here in previous posts about tightening up the clutch pack to increase the "grip" of the LSD. Neither of us have any experience with LSDs so any info would be great.
Hey guys, there is a really good article in the May 2006 issue of "Australian 4WD Monthly" mag.
They recommended taking out the diff head and taking it into a good diff specialist. They pack the LSD With Steel Shim papar (5thou & 10thou) between the LSD casing and clutches which increases the preload. They did a bit of trial and error but packed in the shims until they got a preload of between 90 - 110 lbs.
Aparently it dramatically increased the locking effect and cost approx $200.

bj40 disk brakes
i had the same yr 40 series as you;only it was a import .It had a 3.2 desiel in it & had factory disc brakes.Four pot calipers & vented disc"s.Find one of these & you will have bolt on front discs.Might pay to grab master cyclinder as well;not sure if yours will be different. Also had a mate at that time with a nz 40 series, think he got the whole front diff off a 70 series. Not sure if he put the whole diff in or just bolted on the brakes.Rear discs should be easyer as you have a hand brake on your transfer already.Talk to the guys at 4wdrive up grades & see wot they say. Also lineside wreckers.Hope this helps.
I got a front disc set on trademe - they are advertised occasionally. I'm pretty sure the front is the same from the swivel hub out from either a 60 series or a solid axle Hilux. The you'll need to remove the residual pressure valve from the master cylinder on the front brake lines. Mine have worked fine, although it takes some pretty heavy fot pressure to get hard braking. It might be worth upgrading the master cylinder & power assist as well....
As for the LSD - I put mine in the front & put a lockright in the back. You still get some help from the LSD without the turning hassles of a locked front. I've heard of putting a big washer in to pack out the clutch pack & tighten it up, but I didn't want mine too tight on the front - especially without power steering. If you're running it in the front - it's probably more forgiving if the rebuild isn't quite to specs, since you're only turning it when the hubs are locked. Which also means it won't wear as quick, and will need less frequent oil changes. And with a LSD in the front it will let go before a CV breaks, unlike a lokka..
