How to get tyres off at home

Post by 3VILC »

Hey guys, probably a dumb question and I'm sure the "get a bigger hammer" comment is going to come out
But is it possible to fairly easily remove and refit tyres from the rims at home? Reason I ask is I get the old 'crud stuck under the bead' after a good 4wheeling session, and just wondering if theres an easy way to clean it out at home without paying the $20 per tyre for a tyre shop to pop them off n give them a clean out. (And no I cant yet afford beadlocks or anything its just a budget play truck).
I remember a while back before I got into 4x4 I tried pulling an old car tyre off and it was one hell of a mission I ended up hacksawing thru the tyre to get it off  , of course not an option with $300 mud tyres :)
So if anyone has some tips or tricks I would be hugely greatfull. I suppose I dont even really need to take the tyre right off just push the beads inwards to clean them and slap some sort of sealant in (tyre shop used to do this on my old safari, but I brought the tyres from them so they used to do it for free as long as I put thier stickers on my truck)

Cheers,
Clive

tyre levers $15 each at supercheap, can use base of highlift (against truck tyre on bottom) to break the bead

theres no easy answer other than beadlocks mate, its fawking hard work just trying to get one bead peeled off with tyre levers let alone doing the whole set, if your going to attempt it plenty of lube helps and like Jerry says use your highlift to break the beads first

Thought it might be hard work
Might have to go talk to the local tyre shop nicely  don't live in the same town anymore so can't go where I always used to go.
Only need to do 2 tyres..fronts I guess are a lot more prone due to being turned in ruts etc. Suppose a bit of 'Slime!' or similar wouldnt hurt to help keep them sealed for next time. Wouldnt bother me so much, but they wont even stay up overnight now  And I know its only the beads as you can see them bubbling when wet

I stumbled across this, which might help hold your bead, I painted the insides of my rims (crc black zink) then set bead etc. 2 months latter I have a flat on the rear and the paint has glued the tire to the rim. I removed and put tire on it's side, removed valve and drove over it with my jeep, the bead didn't break, and I had to use the claw of a hammer to remove my bead locking ring.

Also when setting beads you can put a ratchet strap around your tire crank it and inflate.

But for what a tire guy charges, it is a lot of work.
Latest mod, pin stripes, hit the same branch I did on the way in on the way out.

Another trick to break the bead is to drive over the tyre (not the rim)

if I'm guessing right the problem is leaking beads with tubeless :?: I'm not recommending you do it but I'd probably actually do it myself  so if thats the case you could break the beads by any of the above methods and clean all the crap up which will probably result in lots of shit dropping back inside the tyre which you wont be able to get out then pump the tyre back up with the clean beads to get a good seal then after doing that a few times get the tyres peeled off and cleaned up properly

then throw some money together and get some beadlock rims

You can break the bead by using a high lift jack and the truck. Set the foot of the jack on the bead and as you jack up under the truck it pushes down on the foot, pushing the tire off the rim. You may have to repeat a few times on each side, but should get the job done 8)
Or as said, get real friendly with a tire shop guy and get it done cheap. i get mine stripped, cleaned, reset and balanced for $10 a corner

I got one of these tyre changers.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 503764.htm

Works fine, but you need some elbow grease...
I bolt it to the floor in the garage when needed...
Have mounted 5 x Simex 35's.
And demounted and refitted a set of normal car tyres for my son.
Works fine...

This is the best so far
leaking through the bead is still a leak so could argue that.

On the hack I just leave the tyres on the rims and jam the hose inside the tyre with bead popped and wash the majority of the crap out. Screw using levers. Good in a pinch but can be a c&*%!!!

Unless you live really far from a tyre shop, for a roadie I'd make friends with the tyre guy and try arrange a cheap deal like above.

Cheers for all the ideas guys..as I said I used to just take my truck to the tyre shop and they'd do them as a 'free punture repair' even tho it was the beads..even did all 4 at once before, but I don't live there anymore :? Will go try the smaller local shops tomorrow see what I can find. The last one that fixed my spare (leaked since I brought the new truck) charged $25 so won't try them  Apparently another shop that does tyres for my boss only charge him $10 so will try there, same place fixed the radiator in my safari for $20 a while back, just said I couldnt afford a new one n he said sweet as well you could really use a new one, but I can cut out the leaking fins for $20 no garuntees it will cool enough in summer tho. Now most places I know these days wouldve only been interested in charging me $300 to recore it, and it went right thru summer long trips without overheating
Anyway thats enough random off topic ramble :P

I wouldn't bother trying the small local shops

Its a hard thing for them to do cheap repairs etc etc when they are trying to make a buck against the cut throat big boys who are constantly doing the industry no favours

Well cheers guys, dont think I even need a tyre changer, hi-lift worked a treat to pop the bead, pushed rim back in enough to stop the crud and water going inside tyre scraped it all out n washed it away, cant see any bubbles around the seam so hopefully shes all sealed up now, guess I will find out if they are still up in the morning  . Had thought about using the hi-lift in clamp mode to try pop the bead but figured that wouldnt work, hadnt even thought of just using the weight of the truck to push down on it
