4JB1 Boost Up

Post by ZachK-B »

A friend of mine recently intercooled and wound up the boost on his TD27 Terrano and it has made a noticeable difference in power. I have a 2.8 intercooled turbo diesel Bighorn and was thinking about winding up the boost as well. I know I will need a bigger exhaust as Im still running the factory system(i am planning a 2.5 inch system) and will probably need to wind up the diesel pump too. What sort of boost can the turbo and motor handle before I start to have troubles. I have heard of someone running 160ish hp from his but Im not sure what other mods he had done. Any help would be much appreciated

do the exhaust from the back of the turbo wind the boost up to 15 and tweak the fuel as well. run way better on 15 psi and the exhaust makes a big diff.

Drurban has a 2.5 system running 18 psi with no fuel tweaks and posted the readings from the new EGT gauge he fitted in the weekend. It is quite quick on 33's.

Go for it.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

As what sibainmud said I have 2.5" exhaust from turbo, wound up boost to 18psi but on the motor way I can get it up to 20, I know it can go past that.
All my reading from the EGT gauge are in in the safe range, I had not even attempted to tweke fuel or intercooled it yet. Iam running almost worn 33" Khumo KL71's on the road, and it has a bit of grunt.

Cheers.

Thanks for that reply Drurban. I am going to get a 2.5 inch exhaust and am also planning a new set of extractors for better flow. I am also going to move the battery to the passenger side and the intake to the drivers side and put a snorkel on it, this should give me more response and hopefully help keep intake temperatures down.

i wouldnt bother doing extractors or moving the intake, the costs and hassle is not worth it. its intercooled so that will help alot.

bought a bighorn mostly for towing a boat. Any pics of where people usually put the EGT probe? I'm thinking 2.5-2.75 exhaust a bit more boost and I think ill keep the viscous fan but add 2 electric fans to the front of the radiator and possibly add a small one to the intercooler. Any idea what sort of boost they run factory? Hopefully I'll get time to chuck in a boost gauge and EGT gauge this week

10-12 psi factory. i run 15 psi on mine. if you do alot of open road driving a fan is not really worth it on the intercooler, i gain 2 psi more on open rd due to intercooler. the viscous fans are quite good i have never overheated with just the viscous. do the dump pipe on from the back of the turbo. if you are feeling rich get the turbo made into a hybrid mine moves alot more air than it previously did

I did an egr delete and used the hole in the exhaust manifold that provided the egr feed.

Just fitted a boost gauge and I am seeing 15psi quite a bit on a stock setup.

most use the internals from a vf10. no other housings work. my turbo has a bigger front cover, compressor wheel and a larger exhaust housing

why do no other housings work? Because of a strange flange setup or something? I'm not expecting it to bolt up but it cant be that hard to modify the manifold or even build a new one to bolt up a standard t3 or t4 flange etc?
