Auto Trans - TD42 Electrics Help
Hi all.
I'm having trouble with my auto gearbox on my 1990 safari. It's like it's got a mind of its own.
Anyway on way home from work today and it decided it wasn't going to change gear from 1st, so I took it round to my olds since I was nearest them (slowly). Once i got there i took it up and down the road a couple times, flicked the torque converter on and off then suddenly it was changing gears again.
Now I did notice really solid changes (not smooth) from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third earlier this morning and some of this distance home. Still doing this. It won't drop down gears when foot flat now...
Situation has started after I got stuck at the Selwyn River in semi-deep water just over the chassis deep. It was in this hole for about 10-15mins while I had to setup the winch and train the mrs to use the in cab controls. So I assume its water damage to some electrics.
Gearbox is mechanically sound as far as i'm aware, it has been rebuilt with heavy duty frictions. It's just not changing gears properly.
Any idea on a good auto sparky that knows their stuff on the safari auto trans? - Christchurch area only please.
While I'm asking questions, also a good place to take the truck for a WoF where they aren't stupid about non modification lift kits? - Christchurch area also.
Thanks guys. - Appreciate the help to come.
Regards,
James.

Re: Auto Trans - TD42 Electrics Help
on top of throttle linkage is a white plastic joiner connects the tps controller to throttle may have broken
the tps isnt something you want to move as it very touchy ie less than 1mm adjustments make a huge difference best for auto sparky that knows what hes doing.....you can do it yourself took me mths of bonnet up and down with minor adjustment before i got near enough and gave up
or the computer spat the dummy left side kick panel you need same numbers on puter to replace
good luck dude

Re: Auto Trans - TD42 Electrics Help
have you changed the fluid in the trans since it got submerged?
$10 bucks says there's some mayonaise in there and its damaged a few seals.

That's the first thing I checked, trans fluid is flawless. It's definately an electrical fault.

unplug everything to do with auto, dry out, clean contacts and use electrical grease to put it back together,

Interesting. Does this play a huge part in what gear it thinks it should be in?
Re: Auto Trans - TD42 Electrics Help

Bang on the money. Thanks so much for your input. The TPS has been replaced and now its changing perfectly.
Also found that the torque converter switch i have wired in is also creating a fault code
