Are the 90's 2.8 Turbo Diesels OK?

Post by adimw2 »

Looking at Safaris, would anyone recommend the 2.8 TD over a 4.2 TD?

Probably not so suited to heavy towing, but they go quite well. Not quite as robust an engine as td42. Alloy head has potential to crack, and head gaskets can go also. I've got a rd28 in a laurel that I've turbo'd, and although the engine is mega worn out (smokey, bubbly etc), still drives smooth and quiet :-)

Right, based on that I'll stay with the 4.2.

I had a turbo one my gu SWB, did around 80k over 6 years no problems, but there are a few story's on the net, basically like they said above, head gaskets are prone to go at just over 200k, if you don't pick it up say good buy to head then you are stuck trying to find a rear engine part.

But the 4.2 is less gutless (110kw or something :( :( :( ) and has a better rep.

My advise would be get the 2.8 much cheaper truck, thrash it and or rip it out and chuck a v8 in it problem solved.
Latest mod, pin stripes, hit the same branch I did on the way in on the way out.
