What happens when you borrow a trailer

Post by Moriarty »

Needed a trailer for QBW/E to get my 2-potter Petter home.

Ok, Ferg said, "Borrow mine, mate" No WOF or Rego.
Me "Cool"!!
Siwsan "MUST have WOF and Rego!! "
Me "Yes boss"

So I start work on it, rego'ed and Wof checked.

Knocked back with L/H Wheel Brg and Safety chain too small, must have 7.1MM chain min specs.

7.1??? Never seen any size between 7mm or 8mm so its got 8mm Chain.

Wheel Brg.. stripped, cleaned etc and try again Nah, still grumbly
Take Brgs to SAECO in Gill St, NP and the nice man, says......

"Hmmmm this is the inner brg for a first model Consul. its ONLY for this model and is a special, nothing else uses this brg."

Retail price is only $410.00 How many do you want?

Bugger. looks like Trojan stubs and a new axle. Be cheaper.

WHY ME?????????

Awesome Bob.
I have just bought 3t tandem springs with equaliser, 6 stud hubs and stubs (with bearings) disc's and anodised calipers, jockey wheel, 80 mm drops, plumbing as required for brakes, 2500kg hydraulic coupling, and led lights for a transport tariler I am about to put together. And the cost $1400 ish including gst.
If you need a trailer for yourself, don't fark about with old shit. If your fab skills are not up to it, then go and learn some and give it a crack.

Makes a pleasant change trailers normally come back broken lights, missing shackles, safty chain dragged down road, the brakepads worn out because parking brake wasn't released. Oh yeah and then

Damaged wiring. Cuts in tyres. Ramp pins missing. Damaged winch cable. Still waiting for those beers too...

Note to self. Stop lending car trailer!

Good on ya Bob for trying to do the right thing, but more than $200 is well above and beyond hire prices

I feel your pain Moriarty. I borrowed a car trailer once........... And it took me 10 hours to get from Kaitaia to Whangarei.....lol (I can lol now... I wasn't at the time haha) towing an FJ40 with a GQ Safari.

Started with a flat tyre on the trailer about 30 mins south of kaitaia....all good, I'll change it, and I will be away... YEAH RIGHT.

4 out of the 5 wheel studs stripped.... spare knackered.... 3 hours later and lots of cursing, on the road again. 20 mins later... hmmmmm, somethings not right... Oh, the wheel bearing on the opposite site has collapsed... GREAT.

2 hours later (and some more cursing), on the road again.
30 mins out of Whangarei - Waterpump on the GQ flys apart.... AWESOME!

And that trailer had a WOF..... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh and if you are going on about what happens when you lend your trailer out... How about dropping a chimney on it...... not just one chimney, but 6 over a 3 month period  Munted tailgate and floor

goes lke this

Associate "can I borrow your trailer?"

Me "What ya doin?"

Associate (for example) "need to get a load of firewood, found some stuff up the back of a farm."

Me "Mint I need a load too, how bout I bring the trailer and you bring the beers and we get two loads."

If the answer to that is no then guess I will be busy using MY trailer to get MY firewood.

Works for guys shifting stuff too, no one ever turns down an extra set of hands, and you can always make sure the last trip is past the bottle store, they get the picture when you pull in, stop and sit there lookng at them.

I will probably fix it, so it costs me.... so what? Ferg and I have been mates for 30 plus years, and HE hasn't got the skills!! I have. Built a few over the years. Just that NOW I haven't got one. Yeah, I COULD hire one for the whole of QBW for less than its gonna cost to effect repairs. But then Ferg would STILL have a fkt trailer.

Whats a man going to do when its a mate? Do I have a choice? No, I. dont.

I used to live about halfway between Awanui and Kaitaia, went to school at Kaingaroa Primary, then Kaitaia Intermediate. Yeah, I know, there are people out there who reckon I only went there for lunch.... Apparently, theres lots of Packard noses around Taipa, courtesy of my fathers brother.......

Just a thought, (may be way off, but I cant see the setup- I'll leave it to you to make an assessment)
Can you measure bearing size, find a bearing thats similar size (and way cheaper than $410 per bearing), then machine hub/ shaft (or make spacer tube thingy) and fit in cheap bearing??

Spent quite a while sussing out those options

!. Machining the stub is beyond the scope of a 3.5 inch Boxford. (Stubs welded to axle)

2. 1" bore Brg, could get a tapered roller with that bore, but outer dia makes for a very thin bushing, and a way too steep a contact angle.

3. Doing 2 above also makes for a spacer to give correct distance between inner/outer. By the time its all done, I am back to Trojan stubs.

Marty G, Once I have known you for more than 35 years, I WILL borrow your unWOF'd, rego'd trailer.

hmmmm I will then be 101 yrs old..... my needs for a trailer will have diminshed by then.

why not just get a hub and stub kit as suggested? they cost less then $160 for
the lot, and come with the most common wheel bearings you can get

Thats the actual plan, Will need some Holden 5-stud rims with tyres. Are they the same size as jap 5-stud, anybody know?

With trojans or similar, full Wheel brg kit with seals are about $30, so I am told.

you can get most stud patterns in hub and stub kits. falcon rims are the most common and most available too.
the bearings are cheap, but they also come in the kit.
stud patterns are different between holden and jap.

I think the Jap 5 stud is 5x114mm and Holden is 5x120mm.

Just put a new axle under my trailer. I used Toyota Hiace front stubs, which are nice and strong. It also has the capacity for disc brakes in the not too distant future. I don't think you would be able to face the stubs in your Boxford though.
I will post a thread under Blackdog trailer repairs soon.
