Home made snorkel 4 Isuzu Bighorn

Post by billyvanboheman »

Started the snorkel project on the Isuzu tonight, started with the planning but couldnt help taking things out.

These are the before photos of the inside and outside.

And of course I ended up with the bits left over after putting the grille back on (more leftovers than normal though I think)

Image

Next step is to find time over the next couple of weekends to move the power steer reservoir and block off the old air intake on the filter housing and replace it with an inlet at the back.

It's my weekly driver when I'm not on the bike so cant have it in bits for too long.

More to follow.

I knew there was one on the one he had, did not know if he had it still or not but what could be more fun than building it yourself 8)

I enjoy the build as well as the result.

Update,
On Thursday evening removed the air filter assembly and took out some more surplus pipe work, got the hose to move the power steer reservoir from the good buggers at BNT (another unadulterated plug as I shoot with one of the guys who works there) and will hopefully hook into repositioning the reservoir tonight, the next hold up is I went and priced a hole saw to cut 2 1/2 inch hole in the inner guard, seems a bit much to drill two holes!!!! Anyone got one they might like to lend for a weekend afternoon? I would be very careful with it.

Here is where I am up to.

Rather than block off the inlet on the air filter housing can you rotate it so that it's in the correct position to go out through the inner guard?

You might be able to get away with a jigsaw to cut the holes.

Matt.

Thanks for the Idea of rotating the filter housing, but Mr Isuzu made a good job of welding all the pretty rubber mounted brackets to the filter housing assembly.
It's not a problem to blank and reposition the inlet, besides I need the welding practice with the mig on thin metal.
As for jigsaw I might resort to that as I have one here, but it will only be if I can’t find a hole saw to do the job.

Update.

As per this weekends achievements 7/8th October string.

Power steer reservoir moved and air filter housing cut at both ends for blanking of old and welding in new inlet tube.

Used a jigsaw for the hole in the filter housing, but after doing that worked out it will not work on the outer or inner guard due to lack of room.

Here are the pics.

i brought a set of holesaws from bunnings and they were bloody usless. in the end i just marked the circle and got a drill bit and drilled holes in a circle and got one of them bits that cuts sideways to clean it all up with. takes abit longer but you get there in the end and looks just as tidy.

I did at one stage have a set of those multiple band hole saws, if these are the ones you were talking about, metal carrier with slots round it for different size hole saw bands, and centre drill.
If this sounds like the one you are talking about I agree, OK for wood but even then at a stretch.
On metal hopeless, the one I was checking out at Bunning’s was single 2 1/2 inch size and then you had to buy centre carrier separate as well, about $70.00 for the one set up to cut two holes.
I will keep looking I think.

Update time.

Not much progress lately due to all that nasty work stuff!!

Got game this weekend though and cut some holes in the panel work.

I'm doing mine the wrong way round and cutting the holes and making a wire template for the benders to scan.

This is due to my snorkel being longer than the one they had on file.

Here are the latest photos.

Time for a very long overdue update.

I spent some time at the workshop over the weekend and turned these

Image

3 inch stainless

into this

Image

So just a bit of cleaning of the welds to sort, and the mounting brackets and connecting hose for the air cleaner 8) .

And after looking at this post again for the first time in ages, I realised its coming up on a YEAR since I started this
I really need to pull finger and get it finished before the 26th :?

Billy, what is the angles on the second and third bends ??

I am thinking seriously about making one and am thinking that if you have already worked out the angles it is looking easier and easier
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Whats an angle :?: :?: :?

Seriously I couldn't tell you, it was made from 1x 90 deg bend, cut in half and cut to fit by eye :!:

Sorry I can't be more help.

Well finally some progress has been made

Here's a shot from the weekend, which shows the addition of a large piece of pipe that's now 1/2 mounted to the vehicle

Just gota sort the bracket to mount it to the pillar, hopefully this will be done by the end of the week, then some cosmetic cleaning to make it pretty, and a hose to join to the air filter housing, and it's done, FINALLY

Um, I hope not, it's stainless, so if I can make the stainless welds look pretty, I will leave it shiney 8)

The hole got bigger to allow for the bend in the pipe right? My hole got bigger too and then there was a little gap at the front  tricky little bugger those.

But nothing the black door edge material couldn't close up :)

Good luck with the polished Stainless look and for the wedding next year.
