connecting tacho,having problems

have a commy v6 in my zuk and im trying to connect up tacho,im having problems :? printed something off the net and it said connect the wire coming from tacho to the out put on the oil pack(brown),connected up the black and red wires etc.i rang a mate and he said put my volt meter on DC and connect to that brown wire and earth i should get a reading,i did this and got nothing.....big phat zero....would this mean im doing something wrong?? well i no im doing something wrong just gotta figure out what :lol:

it should be on the negative of the coil not the positive so you wont get any voltage reading between ground and the negative (sorry i cant help you with the wiring colours) hopefully the coil has some marking on it to let you know which is negaitve.

right so everything iv found about the wiring tells me that i need to connect onto a brown wire iv found 3 different wiring diagrams that say this,tried connecting to brown but got nothing...thought it could have been the tacho so brought another one,still no joy :( iv got power getting to it cos the back lights going when i turn the lights on,have it switched to 6 on the back...what else could be going on??any ideas.

Older style tachs take a high voltage feed off a coil like on a carbed v8 whereas newer injector motors use a low voltage feeble typically off an ignitor.

Make sure you have the correct tach type for your motor.

also the buick engine runs a wasted spark system so it fires twice per combustion cycle. one side of the "chocolate block" is a common positive, the other side has three wires which are earths that go to the ecu.

this is why there are only three coils as apposed to six (one per cylinder)

so if your engine is running at 1500 rpm its"the tacho" going to read 3000 if it is an aftermarket job.

there should be a independent tacho or "engine speed output wire" that runs to the dash board loom from the engine loom.

If i remember rightly it's pin 35 on the ecu and depending on the age of the engine it will be a low voltage 16 gauge yellow wire with green stripe.

you will need the pinout diagram, not just the wiring diagram

hmm its a new one just brought off tm,has a switch for 4 6 or 8 on the back i wouldv thought it would be fine..

thanks i may have to try and tap into that wire.the motor is the last of the series one vn.just not getting a reading at all,doesnt move off zero.
