Its an electronically controlled box if its the A340H.....
Typically it could be a few things.
The OD wont come on unless the ecu see's the correct temps of the trans / engine.
So it could be .......
loose / dirty connector to the temp sensors.
or
solenoid valve in the box could be sticking / failing. (more likely this one)
or
ECU playing up.

I doubt it would require a box out and in the shop scenario...
If it was me, I would check all the harness connections...
Then temp sensors...
Then change the solenoid...(drop trans pan to get to it)

Plenty of info on the net about this type of box and spares are cheap it you go to the right places (ebay)

I'd like to thank everyboby for thier help. After extensive head scraching, testing, the technicians have found a fault in the throttle control sensor.Having this replaced will test and hopefully confirm problem solved. will keep you informed.

Sorry only just saw this. Keep your old sensor won't be anything wrong with it they just get dirty connacts on the plug. Have fixed about 20 of these by cleaning the plug very known fault.
