Custom Cruiser Build

Post by ClassicCruiserSpares »

Ok so most of you know I have sold the colonel to be replaced with a new custom built Cruiser.
I started collecting bits along time ago and thought this year will be as good as any to build the new truck.
So fingers crossed itll be complete within a year  (but we've all said that before.)

Started off buying these 80series diffs with factory E-Lockers.
Image

But soon decided that the 8'' front diff would'nt withstand the beating and big tyres im going to run. I started mucking around with old diffs trying to cut and shut a 9.5" head to the 80series axle tubes etc but that was abit out of my fabrication skills so gave up on that.
So I ordered one of these custom 9.5" housings from the states instead.
Image
Image
That will be here in a couple of weeks and all I need to do is fizz the 80series swivel housings onto it.

I also order some of these 80series 6 shooter Knuckles at the same time.
Image

The tyres I want to run need 17" rims so brought these of trademe.
Image

I spun the centres out and flipped them and rewelded them back in, now they look like this.
Image

The rims are off to sand blast next week then the paint shop.
Then onto the body, I removed the doner body from a spare truck. Completely stripped it out including spending hours removing the sound deadining.
And off it went to sand blast last week.
Image
Image

So thats were im upto so far once I get the tub back then itll be onto fabbing up the new custom chassis. :D

Bling

Very jealous  this already sounds like the kind of build I've been pondering/dreaming of doing for a few years now but haven't had time or money to start.
Scratch built chassis is definitely the way to go. What engine an trans are you planning for it?

Theres was a few reason for going down this track,
1: Hate cleaning rusty chassis rails and paint etc to try and put a nice weld on.
2: By the time i cut the bits off i dont want and modify it there wont be anything left anyway.
3: I want the rails under the body alot wider to give me more room underneth for the fuel tank and the mid mount winch. :D

You'll have to keep checking in to see the motor and trans

Picked up the body from sandblast today, thankfully the weather held off so it didnt get wet.
Image

This was the only spot of rust in it.
Image

This is how it looks before.
Image

How it is now.
Image

I cut the lip off the top and have welded in 3mm plate to the top and rear of the tub to strenghten because the roll cage etc will be added to it later.
Image
Image

Still need to shape the bottom bit and around the fuel filler and weld up. :D

Awesome work. New metal looks very tidy.

So you will brace that internally through the tub?

I'm very excited about this build!

The cage will come through the top of the rear panel in about 4 places and the rear tray will join into the back also. The cage is not going to be removable so will be grafted into the body. :D

I'll be keen to watch the progress on THIS build Jase. Just please make it faster than nibs build. I couldn't wait that long, again.
And thanks for putting it up here on ORE. I'm sure lots of us will learn from this one.

I'm itching to know what the power plant and trans will be.

I wish ORE's notifications were working coz this thread and Jim's are the only ones I look forward to updates on.
