mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Anyone have any 5.29 8" gears for a Pajero they'd like to part with? they're for a series one, but I've already got an 8" front housing ready to go in, still the original 8" rear.
thanks

Yea, though I drive through the valley of death (and it's mudbogs), I shall fear no trail;for tho art modified is my rig, and thy lift kit and lockers they comfort me. Amen

Takes a bit of mucking about to get a 5.29 8 incch diff into the front but you may have worked that out...

Thanks wrnglr and njv6. Ive already grabbed some stuff from john hes a good bloke will have a chat to him.
What is involved nj apart from an 8" housing then putting the ring and pinion in? Im putting a locker in at the same time too. I also bought a front driveshat and cvs axles etc. What else needs to be looked at?

You need the earliest model Pajero rear diff out of a diesel with the right ratio. Then get the ARB (or similar) part for that diff, fit locker, then put the rear diff in the front of an early V6 housing (8 inch low pinion), the next model with the high pinion one won't work.
But it looks like you have it sorted, sounds good, let us know what you think when done. Good one.

Cool thanks for that njv6 I'm on the right track then. I grabbed a gen I 8" front diff from a 3l v6, plus matching front driveshaft and axles etc. I'm just sourcing the crownwheel and pinion sets from the 8" rear then i can put the locker in. Definately goinf genuine arb for the extra dosh i think its worth it from what others have said. You go for genuine in yours?

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Yes, I don't have the 5.29's though, just 4.9's. I have ARB's but the rear one has leaked since I got it, its a prick of a thing. Doesn't leak on the bench when loading it up but under load it does in the vehicle. It leaks so much the compressor can't keep it locked but there is no obvious defects in it.

Oh hell thats gotta be a right royal pain when you need to engage! My rear arb is all good...luckily as i bought it of TardMe in unknown condition. You tried new seals and all that stuff? Hope i dont have the same dramas on the front they are a pain to get in and out at the best of times. Do you have the large rear or small?
What was the reason you stayed with the 4.9s? Does that gearing just work for you? You running 35s or 33s? Reason i ask is i currently hav 4.6s and low 1st is awesome...plenty of legs with the 33s...but with the 35s i dont think there will be enough pull from the old 2.6. Just want to get good drive and you know alot about the Pajeros...keen on your opinion. Mine is a swb series 1 with a 2.6 petrol and manual with pto wnch.
Many thanks njv6

Na, mines alot later, there are 3 rear diff sizes, the 8 inch, the 9 inch and the 9.5. Mines the 9.5 one, not so good for clearance but pretty tough. Mine was 4.6 but I put diesel 4.9's in, only those two are available in the large large diff. And its still to high, needs lower transfer gears. I run 33's.
While you are doing the swap up front, put the generation 2 suspension arms on, should give you a little more movement as well. They will bolt in.

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Ah ok i understand. Are you running a higher hp engine in yours? Or you want that bulletproof rear? I think I'm quite lucky with my truck i dont make much power so its good having some ground clearance on the toyo boys. Thanks for the advice re the arms...I have an idea they are g2s with flipped bjs...mine seems to have more artic than another Pajero i looked at...pretty decent for an ifs'er anyway. If the locker is the go then it'll probably stay ifs. How does your truck go compared to the beam axle boys? Would you ever do a sas conversion or is she pretty tough with the twin lockers now?
One other thing tho - the 8" rear arb is an rd05, but the 8" low pinion front is listed as an rd110? Any ideas why? Or should they both be rd05s?

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Gen 2 Upper arms have ball joints you can unbolt and Gen 1's are pressed in. Thats the easiest way to tell. Mine is a 3.5, still not a locked beam axle but with a locker it goes a long way to fixing that.
Re the locker number, a RD110 is not for a low pinion, its for the high pinion one. That is the only locker available for the front of any Pajero but since you are putting a rear in the front, you want another RD05.
Having just looked at the part numbers, it puts a different diameter axle shaft for the RD05 so proceed with caution that there is a slight chance it doesn't work and I have not done this exact swap myself. ARB are sometimes wrong with what fits what so it might just be that.

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Ok...had a bit more of a hunt about and looked at my diff bits I have here. It looks as if (after some crude measurements) the same crownwheel and pinions from the 8" rear will fit the 8" LP front. But, the heads are different as the front runs a clam type housing and the rear is a std diff head that bolts in. So you are right in that the rear cw & p will fit, but it looks like they must be used on the front head in the front case. So back to the rd110 but I'll confirm for sure once i get the head out to do the swap over.
Cant wait to get her all locked up want to chase some of the v8 boys haha

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Well we did manage to find a pair of 5.285s but they were gen II config, 9" rear and hi pinion front, which wont fit my gen I but would fit your gen II. He doesnt recall ever wrecking a gen I with the 5.29s in, and he currently has a swb 2.3TD non intercooled very early truck there. Thats what i thought those diffs would have come out in. But all is not lost, I'm doing my homework mitsi style at the moment may have found the answer will let you know if I am correct. Give him a call if you want those 5.29s for your truck njv6. The front diff should take the same arb locker, it just wont bolt into my low pinion front end. All you will need to do is swap the crownwheels and maybe the pinions over as they should be identical to your current config. Dont have to disturb the lockers then

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
No, the hi pinion 5.29 won't take the ARB, in fact it won't take any locker. I am not after 5.29's, its a step backwards for me, smaller front diff, and smaller rear diff, not to mention the axles that break.

Hmm ok this one is an 8" front and 9" rear. You have the 9.5" rear? 4.9's if I remember?

Re: mitsi 5.29 8" wanted
Yup mine 4.9, the 5.29 is a smaller crownwheel, its 7 and a 1/4 inches instead of 8.
