I think it is these motors that the Arabs love. They bang 1000 and more hp out of these (with varying degrees of success )
They are cheaper to buy because of the atrocious fuel figures (same goes for any of the bigger petrol wagons) but also cheaper to rego and no RUC's.

Arabs use the later model 4.8, double overhead cam, completely different motor. The 4.5 are basically an updated TD42, had both, 4.5 ok, 4.8 much better

Im on my 2nd 80 series, both under 300K (this one was 217 when I got it 18 months or so ago)

Everything has been said above obviously - BEB's being the big one, my last one had receipts for the work having been done - all made up sadly & kerpow a Xmas ago 8(

New one has been a dream - apart from injectors & pump overhaul, still only manages 450 a tank (auto / 33's) so will be off for a tune soon to fix that
New bigbore from Rage woke it up a bit too, bit quiet mind.....ha

Oh & I paid $11K sight unseen from some swanky resort in Wanaka for mine, silly people had spelt Toyota & Landcruiser wrong
Mint original condition inside & out never had a wheel in the mud & factory working lockers was a nice surprise when it arrived

Still keen on peoples experience with Patrol 4500 petrol reliability and longevity as the following looks like a good buy.

Actually very good motors and very popular in Aussie. A few of the aussies are now running them in comp vehicles.
Mate has one, absolutely loves it.

Dearer at fuel pump but overall I reckon they will be as cheap if not cheaper than diesel to run given the RUC charges, higher maintenance costs and higher rego of diesel vehicles.

You might be thinking of the 4.8? Quite a popular motor over here, don't mind a bit of extra air shoved down their throat either.
I looked at buying a 4.5 Patrol in Aussie but was a little disappointed when I took it for a test drive, especially after being in a diesel turbo 80 series. The link you posted is the top spec model, few extra flashy bits and most of them came out with Diff locks. My work mate over here had one for 4 years, didn't do any towing with it but no problems except for general servicing and he loved it. Don't expect any better than 20l/100km with them.

Have you looked at territory's at all? My boss has an 07 and keeps going on about how well it tows his boat and caravan. Prefers it way over his 09 prado. You can pick some up for a good price too.

gimmemud, I did consider a territory and then discounted it. Not a great deal of room in the back and they are fairly low to the ground so not ideal for beach launching. My friend has the turbo model (work car) and it's lovely on the road but drinks like a very dehydrated sailor.

I had one just like it, should never have sold it. The 24v manual is awesome and reliable as anything. Best mod I did was a part time 2wd kit, and removing the emissions gear which I did when I intercooled it, really woke it up performance wise as the emission gear really limits the off boost performance. You would love this truck trust me. Would hold its value really well being a low km manual 24v. I also had a turboed gq patrol with every imaginable upgrade which was a great tuff truck, however I personally much preferred my 80 for road driving, great big car.

Yeah it looks mint but I still can't bring myself to spend $25k on a 18year old truck. Real low Ks but how likely is it to have done so few over that many years? Possible I guess.

I took my first 80 for a drive yesterday. I was impressed by the performance of the 4.2td - very grunty. They are definitely more car like to drive than a patrol/safari. Not as much leg room in front though. Overall I would be really happy with a good one.

Couple of questions? When I shifted from high range to low range the centre diff light came on - is that correct? But when I pushed a button on the dash that said diff lock a PWR light came on? Just wanted to know if that was correct?

The power was kind of all or nothing. When I went to take off like normal it was slow as and then if you planted boot it was like a rocket - maybe it had a sticky accelerator.

Yep they pop into CDL when in low - leg room in the back has always made me laugh out loud too
When I was shopping for a 4X4 all I wanted was a XD Falcon wagon with clearance & a front diff - shame the leg room in the back of a VX is a bit lacking / lucky my kids have short legs however ha

Good trucks, but if you do loads of long on-road trips - have a backup 'car' IMHO

Should the PWR light appear on the dash when the difflock button is pressed? I don't understand - why have a difflock button if it goes into difflock by itself when you move into low range?

So you can select centre diff lock in high range too, say if you were on a beach or a slippery gravel road that didn't require low range but did require more traction and control

My PWR light doesn't come on when I engage the CDL or shift into low range, only if I press the ECT button.... and the button is so you can lock the CDL in high range, and go over 40kph (driving along the beach etc)

You can also pull out a plug on the gearbox and the center diff lock will only work in low range if you press the button which is handy for reversing trailers

Well I got there in the end

Ended up buying a 1UZ surf. Picked it up late last week and I am thrilled with it. It is absolutely mint and the motor puts a big stupid grin on my face.

I just bought a '93.

Rebuilt engine and auto approx 100k kms ago. Showing its 400,000kms on the inside. Its got the 2nd trans cooler plumbed in already. Steering box has been repaired/reinforced. Lockers and Low box dont appear to have been used in its lifetime. Got a flare duct-taped on and the aerial needs replacing. But hey, shes a tow-wagon for the Landy, not a show pony.
