Where to get Sandblasting media

Post by Dirtydog »

Hey guys got a little question for those of you in the know,

Just wondering where you can buy the 25kg bags of sandblasting grit in southland, specifically the gore area?

ive found it online a few places but im not looking at paying twice what the item is worth just for freight.

cheers,

ive also heard it is illegal for good reasons to use normal sand.

there is super cheap down in invercargill, but thats a good hour away from where i live.

im mainly after garnet and walnut media, so hopefully i can find it.

Yes, using normal Silica Sand is not good for your health, look up Silicosis.

Try your local freight company. If they don't use it in their workshop then they will at least have brought it down and know the cost. I think it's around 250 for a ton, at least up in the north.

Try the "tool shop" its a franchise that is up north... they have a good bastards club free to join and gives you trade price ... if you buy more than 25kgs it is freighted instead of courier.... run a search online for "The tool shop"

Or if you want it on the cheap, have a look in the phone book for commercial outfits that do sand blasting see if they will sell you some ..... did this yr's ago got half a ton of used sand for a box  screened about half it and put the rest in the kids sand pit

My old man is using qaurtz sand that he got locally(hedgehope).... I'll ask him next time I'm down or I talk to him

You want to be very careful with used stuff and use safety gear. A lot of it is loaded with lead and other stuff from old industrial paints

I wouldn't put it in a kids sandpit

Cheers Richard

Any local sandblasters? go hit them up, theyll usually sell it to you cheap enough. Theres a couple of boat builders down there isnt there? or Industrial painters? try them.
