Vitara Gearbox issues

Post by lincooln »

Hi all

Right, well I have a new gearbox that I got, and new chassis etc, I was getting ready to fit the engine to the new box when I noticed that the bell housings were a bit different. Had a closer look and the new gearbox is missing some mounting points t the old one.

Old one has points from either side of the box that go to the engine mounts on the engine and the new box has nothing like that, just the 4 mounts to the engine. (see Pics)

So I was wondering if I should change over bell housings? how hard/easy is this? Should I just leave the extra mounts off? are they really necessary?

My engine is a carby G16a and the engine the gearbox came off was a Escudo injected G16a

Cheers

Hi man, that gearbox in the top picture appears to missing a large chunk of the input bearing retainer ?

As far as the bell-housing goes, piece of piss to swap them over, it's just the bolts holding them together, no seals or anything else.

Hey man, cheers. I think its just the release bearing making it look weird in the top pic.

Might have to find a rattle gun I can borrow to undo the bolts then.

Ahh yes, that makes more sense! When I rebuilt my gearbox those bolts were not too bad to get out, don't think I needed a rattle gun for those.

It's probably the safe option to switch the bell-housings over, that way you know you still have what you had before. If all else fails I have a rattle gun, can bring the gearbox over to my place or I could come to yours, but unfortunately I'm busy till late Sunday, so will have to be next week!

Well got them all swapped over all good. If I find me an engine mount then I may just be able to get the engine in this weekend and then get the body ready to be swapped over soon.
