Best Shocks for 4WD

I am in the middle of a few upgrades on my 89 Isuzu Bighorn and one thing that needs replacing is shocks.
I am looking at a spring lift in the rear (new higher set springs) and have started looking into the torsion bar front to see what up adjustment I still have.
It currently has some very tired gas shocks in it, hence my question, what am I best to look for?

What impact if any does gas have over oil for articulation?

Any advice would be appreciated, other than the mandatory Make bashing, those replies will be respectfully ignored as Isuzu owners are like the McDonalds Chicken Royale, just a better class of off Road conveyance devices.hehehe

Other than that buy a new truck, no make bashing, just something non-IFS (rules out Isuzu I think, funny that)

My Isuzu has an extended front diff breather that goes into the engine bay, and a rear diff breather that is factory with extension hose up under body with breather hood mounted high. I plan to extend that one into the engine bay at some stage but I gather Mr Isuzu intended his 4WD's to do the deep water thing and survive.
Interesting that it seems not all manufacturers had the same intentions.

Pitty mister Isuzu in all his infinite wisdom did'nt have any intention of putting a solid axel under your truck
