another place to look is the shock mounts.. I threw a rubber out of one once... sounded like I had run over a dwarf with a hammer....

Also the double cardon is on the front driveshaft so will only make noises when in 4wd as the pain comes on.. currently thinking i have this problem..

the other thing to check that can cause knocking is in the hub itself there is bronze bushes that become egg shaped. mine started knocking in 4wd only as there was load but after a while they really wore out and it happened when 4wd wasn't engaged so i replaced them, put free wheeling hubs on and they haven't worn out yet.
