Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Damn, thats a very nice looking ride. Well done!
Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Not much of an update but these turned up a couple of weeks ago!
Thanks to Tigerz11 (Mud Hog), cheapest I found in the country delivered and $50 a tyre cheaper than local
Silverstone dealer.

Just waiting for the rims to get sprayed (too lazy to do them myself) then theyll be mounted, Truck still being wired.
Another week away..

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Shit yer this is epic. id love to do something similar, but with a 5L+t at some stage. You can pick the 2lt prados like this up for steal at times and it gives you coil sprung solid front end goodness

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
A few pics, still got to finish the front bar and put a bit more interior together.
Got the wheels on today and found they stick out a bit so fitted some flexi flares before cert next week. Will put some decent photos up when I see daylight next..

Also made a bracket for the shifter to mount to, need to track down new centre console, brittle as hell.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Thats wickedly tidy fella. That engine conversion looks factory.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
i rekon you should push that rear axle back a bit so it looks more factory and have less departure angle, plus in the process you could lenghten the links for more flex

SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
A couple of updated pics, front bars just a bit of 6" channel with ends on it and some heavy walled tube on that. Looks ok, my first attempt at bar work.
Still on the to do list:
-Manual front hubs
-Spotlights
-Snorkel
-New shocks
-Make a rear bar/pintle and 4bolt towbar.

Bar work looks great
, The truck is very tidy youve done a mint job,
Good work.

Good work.

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Thanks
oh yeah and a hoodlining at some stage..

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Put some spotties on the truck the other day, just some cheap arse Nitestalker? ones.

Also did a little mod so I can lock the rear diff in 2wd and Hi4, Just needed to earth the no8 pin in the 4x4 control ecu plug. Tricks the ecu into thinking Im in Lobox
The black one.

Job done. Works sweet and took all of 10min.

Few weeks ago I replaced the LSPV with a Willwood brake proportioning valve, seems the truck passed wofs and cert(twice) with next to no rear brakes. All sorted now, a bit of a concoction of fittings but works.

Also a pic of the Driveshaft loop for cert. Was just one of Trademe mounted long ways so it hung down low enough. Easy enough to just unbolt the bottom half of the loop when 4wdn so it doesnt get caught up.

Just snorkel and new shocks to go.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
very impressive well done. might want to put a protective cover on that proportioning valve. that spot can get a bit of impact in deep mush. wont take much to bend that knob shaft.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Awesome build !
Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Well finally got around to fitting the hilux stubs and aisin manual hubs on Saturday, what a messy C*"& of a job! The kit I ordered had the hilux/early LJ inner axle seals which are too small for mine, ended up getting some seals from Ripco which may or maynot be ideal...
Anyway all done now and seems to be working great, fitted new rotors and all new seals while I was there. Anybody got a better recommendation for those shitty little screws that lock the wheel bearing nut in? both the Electric ones and the Aisin ones are near forked...

Stripped..

the old and the new...

All done.

and just in time to go for a hunt... very productive weekend!

Re; Tork Screws, use a flat ended punch on the head before undoing, or Buy some Cap screws and machine the heads to the same CSK angle as the tork screw heads. then use an allan key wrench.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Ditch the cap screw bearing lock fella and go for the double nut with locking washer. LN 106 Hilux etc have them.

ridiculously cool

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Good shot! This truck looks better in person. 35's suit it. I agree with your rear axel idea thou.

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Wheel bearing lock nut:
For the screws I just used some counter sunk cross head ones...Off the shelf variety.
They don't need to be super tight as they only hold the lock ring on.
And don't take load....
You can go the double nut and tab washer way, but why go backwards when the original way is soooo much easier to adjust and lock off...
And they never back off.....

Having now got the lock tabs like on the hilux I'm wondering if I can change mine to the prado style, The front wheel bearings have to be adjusted every 3-6 months at the mo

Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
Why did you have to do a drive shaft loop? Your trucks not a scratch build. All you've done is a motor transplant. Your cert guy knows squat.
Re: LJ71 Ute Chop and Repower
5.22.1
A drive‐shaft safety‐loop must be fitted to a low volume vehicle with an open drive‐line, in the case of
either:
(a) any custom chassis in a rear‐drive front‐engine low volume vehicle; or
(b) any modified production chassis in a rear‐drive front engine low volume vehicle, where:
(i) the vehicle has had an engine conversion that has resulted in a significant increase in
power or torque; or
(ii) the vehicle has had its factory‐fitted engine significantly modified, such that a significant
increase in power or torque has resulted; o
