Have you run http://www.malwarebytes.org/ on your laptop...?
You can run this in safemode...
Download a fresh version so it has all the recent definitions already updated, and wont need to phone home to get them.

It will tell you what the virus is, and if it doesn't/cant remove it, at least you will know what virus you are trying to remove, and can then go searching for "how to's"

Let us know

So you've logged into safe mode?

If you don't have access on the infected machine you can transfer the file over via USB drive.

Google the issues on your good machine and it will give you a lot of good advice, take your time and don't call a geek just yet.

'Safemode' should give you a functioning desktop, just without all the services running in the background.
ie, no network access, no active applications, reduced graphics performance.
Are you getting to something like this...?

You can select to login to 'Safemode with networking'.

But first try as clumz1 suggests download malwarebytes on a good machine, put it on a USB drive, and transfer it to the infected machine once you are in safemode.
Once there, install and run it.

From here, Google is your best friend.

Or let us know what Malwarebytes says, and we can help...

If you have no luck doing that, you can also try an offline application like:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline?SignedIn=1
You will need a good machine to download and burn the utility to disk with.
and how to boot your machine from the CD Drive.

Eitherway, let us know.

Looks as this could be what has got my L/Top.
Even in the safe mode It always leads me to System Recovery.then to S.M.A.R.T virus which want $$$$ to remove the offending virus.
I'm running ESET Antvirus , evan that says there are no problems.
What would be my next move.?

The amount of virus that Apple's get is proportional to there market share.
As their market share grows, so will the amount of virus's getting get written for that platform.
It's just a question of numbers.

But if Apple users are complacent, the ramifications will be worse.

Just my 2 cents

Still no joy, I can't get past the acer start screen with all programs shown as empty, except one that says " Data Recovery ". I'm running XP.
When in Safe Mode how can I install a Rescue2 program from an USB Stick?

Apple might have back flipped on the "virus" status.
Fact is for me, ever since I ditched my Windoze Toshiba Satellite lapdog and brought a Macbook? I've never had a "lockup" or "freeze" or even "go slow" in the past 5 years since owning it.
In the first year of owning the lapdog I had all of the above!!
While I might think of running virus software in the near future on my Macbook? Since now, I've never bothered with virus software. But since April this year? Yup, things have changed. But before then? Windoze was far behind. Still is. To this day. Windoze will always try and emulate the Mac environment. And why do you think that is?
Apple/Mac has grown so much since the 80's and still does. Why do you think that is?
And no matter what ever is stated here by you Windoze loves? Apple Mac will still grow. So go fark yourselves Windoze lovers. 8)
