What flavour TD27T does your Terrano have?

Post by danielbeek »

I always assumed my facelift 1995 JDM Terrano would have a TD27T4 (see details below), however I found a sticker on the side of the rocker cover the other day that states it to be a TD27T1! Supposedly only found in Homy and Caravan vehicles, and only a puny 98.6hp/230NM. I know the vehicles history from about 3 y/o, and an engine swap seems very unlikely.
So what gives the TD27T4 about 15% more power? Different turbo, more boost? Was it a spec option? Does anyone actually have a Terrano with a 'T4 in it? Be nice to liberate those extra (free?) ponys...

According to wikipedia:
TD27T1 - Nissan Homy & Caravan series E24 from 1988 to 1993
100 PS (73.5 kW; 98.6 bhp) @ 4000 RPM
23.5 kg·m (230 N·m; 170 lb·ft) @ 2200 RPM

TD27T2 - Nissan Terrano and Datsun Truck series D21 from 1988 to 1996
100 PS (73.5 kW; 98.6 bhp) @ 4000 RPM
22.0 kg·m (216 N·m; 159 lb·ft) @ 2200 RPM

TD27T3 - Nissan Mistral series R20 from 1994 to 1997
100 PS (73.5 kW; 98.6 bhp) @ 4000 RPM
24.8 kg·m (243 N·m; 179 lb·ft) @ 2200 RPM

TD27T4 - Nissan Terrano series D21 from 1994 to 1995
115 PS (84.6 kW; 113.4 bhp) @ 4000 RPM
24.8 kg·m (243 N·m; 179 lb·ft) @ 2200 RPM

EDIT: The T4 appears to have come out in '94 September-> Terranos, but limited to JDM R3M SPORT model! This vehicle, from what I can tell, is identified by 1) widebody, 2) auto aircon (climate control). Possibly also with nudgebar, but that may just be an optional accessory. At a guess, this may also be the model with adjustable shocks.
There was also a R3M with standard 100 PS, widebody, and auto aircon, and a R3M URBAN with same features but manual aircon.
In '93 and earlier there were SPORT and RECARO SPORT models, unfortunately these were all with 100 PS engines. Be good if some pictures of the RECARO seats could be found. Suspect they may have been only in pre-facelift, and covered in horrible light brown cloth, but with chunky bolsters.

Have you got a photo of the sticker?
I've only seen the 'T1- 'T4 reference used in wikipedia before, never seen evidence of Nissan using it themselves?

I have noticed about these engines that the td27t in terrano is different to those in navaras (navara has no EGR, so different intake and crossover pipe).
Mistral is again slightly different (heater hoses different size, turbo intake not flanged). Then later (97-) mistrals have intercooler and different intake/exhaust manifolds(brackets to hold intercooler) and EFI.
R50 terrano has side mount intercooler, EFI, and a different turbo again, and a different intake manifold.
Most likely other differences as well, thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
cheers,
Nath

Mine has got a TD27t
Apart from the differences the Nath has said to do with different pumps and turbos, they all TD27's
Don't get hung up on HP ratings as I believe these are just guidelines
Tweake it here and there and expect a few more ponies out of the old girl :P

Lol at gas station in bulls the other day, guy comes up and points to his mistral (the non facelift model) and asks, do you mind if i look at your Mistrals intercooler set up.. I said sure. Then proceeded to ask how much the custom bonnet cost....

I'm like ummmm it's standard.... :?

Don't some intercooled Mistrals have conceiled ducting in the bonnet and others have a bonnet scoop. Not sure what year mistral it applies to. Maybe his was the former and he hadn't seen a bonnet scoop one before?

Only the facelift models have an inter cooler, earlier ones didn't so no bonnet scoop. Once again Nissan subtly changing things.

R50 Terrano (96 onwards) run either the TD27eti or QD32eti (over sized TD27).
The 3 litre ones were hand grenades

My 95 terrano has 115ps on a sticker on the rocker cover and I would be interested to know what the differences are as well. It used to be an auto and is now a manual and unmodified runs 10 pounds boost

Interesting, my 99ps '95 also runs 10 psi. Only difference is mine is a manual, though doubt that has anything to do with it.
Does yours have an egt system? Maybe you could post a photo of your engine bay - I'll do likewise - might reveal something if it's not fully internal differences.

Got a interim replacement turbo, was planning on rekitting the turbo thats currently on the truck. The one that turned up is a Garrett A/R .48, JW1 M4 .49
Compressor housing
Compressor housing

The unit on the truck currently has another 3 bolt flange on the compressor outlet
Question:
Does anybody else have this type of turbo/housing on their truck and are the housings interchangeable?

Have done a few searches but cant seem to find any hard/fast answer

Could be wrong, but that appears to be either mistral td27t or r50 td27eti turbo

After pulling the other unit off my truck the garrett appears to be slightly bigger, but have alot better exhaust flow. I got the die grinder out just to match it all up nicely. Will chuck some picks up later
