Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

ah you finally get it, you forgot the hand holding that will entail, but you are able to blame it on the fact you were deprived of the latest x-box games as child that as a result, caused your poor judgement to be driving a vehicle that a govt offical could not see the point in owning or even wanting to drive, and if your day was going real bad you could be drug tested under the NZFWDA drugs rules, and have a penalty that as yet has yet to be decided on what it is, but as the two drug tests that were on a completely random basis picked the top 2 competitors for the year you may be safe from that.
X box wasn't in my childhood, I was a 70's child and space invaders was the first true gaming, although donkey kong was popular It's yours for $1.50 Richard as long as I can get a lift authority card for the bighorn, it's sporting 30inch tahs
What a lot of people fail to realise is that total club membership in NZ is in the majority of 4x4,s that get used off road. Of the club members(and others), the ones running large agressive tyred heavily modified trucks are still very much in the minority. I can't for the life of me see why there is a need to run excessive lifts and huge tyres any way. Trials trucks even have a tyre limit-and for good reason. Why should the few dictate to the minority? If you can,t get there on 33,s -get the friggen spade and shovel out. Ban those bigger tyres and give everone a fair go-or lose access. Simple really.

Another thing that people fail to realise it that alot of damage is done by little tyres that rely on momentum and excessive wheel spin to get through the sticky spots that the big tyres simply walk over and do no damage. Big tyres don't do damage, dickheads with no respect or driving skill do.

Oh dear. Rather than sensible discussion you attack the Author. Typical.

Now listen here grandma. If you want a sensible discussion, we shall have one. But if you are just here for laugh, or worse you are as bigger dickhead as you come across as, then you can't afford my time and as far as I am concerned you are basically just wasting oxygen.
I back Jafa 100% on this as it is the "hero's" on small tyres causing the majority of the damage.

It seems you support a max tyre size of 33". Do you run this maximum size, or set the example by running 31" or smaller, to prove the "bigger isn't always better" theory? I'm just trying to figure out where this magic number came from, and whether it's just due to the fact that it happens to be what you, and other supporters of the tyre size limit run.
Dave. This is the maximum size we allowed on our Tag Alongs, it is also a guide used by other similar businesses..This, and other require ments were WHAT THE LAND OWNERS wanted. Before I sold my tourist business we ran the same size as the Farmers/runholders and DOC on the properties. We instructed our clients in proper driving techniques and if there was any damage done-I repaired it. Bear in mind that just one sheep station we used had 150 km of tracks on it, plus the hard fence line tracks and a few extreeme climbs that we were/are still able to use. All our entry forms stated the requirements, and on one tour a guy turned up with a spare set of wheels that were slightly over size-but he seemed like a nice enough bloke, so rather than send him packing I tolerated him for the one trip. As to the whiskey comment on the Mountain, yes there is still a bottle there today and as holder of a Transport operators licence, and a passenger licence, I would shout clients that wanted a nip, but not myself. (Unless doing a recky-clearing tracks etc by myself-just reward I reckon). Thanks for the sensible question-I am more than happy to answer these.Muzza.
Cheers Muzza. I'm on the fence on this one, as I don't intend to run bigger than 33's myself, and can see where the arguements from both sides are coming from.

Many years ago I thought big tyres were going to do less damage. A mate had a Unimog and could drive it anywhere-but didn,t drive ruts as this would have stuffed the farmers and our DOC tracks. The trouble is one vehicle at a time used properly and with consideration for others is not the problem. The problems come when a group of vehicles get together and then (lets face it we have all seen it) test and encourage each other by attacking bogs, side tracks, making their own tracks, and as mentioned else where even attempting the 'tracks' in 2 wheel drive. This then causes deeper ruts, the next lot of 4 wheelers come along, see the side tracks etc. Then the damage gets so severe that there is obviously a magic bullet solution......-get bigger tyres.....LOL. Is it 5 oclock yet? I see a Tuis comng on.
from the sounds of it all the clubs need to start an education/reporting system for people seen driving in a manner causing damage to tracks and maybe get doc involved so they are seen to be doing something collectively
Just got an email today, The Southern Zone has put together a meeting next week with the CEO of LVVTA, a local certifier and a vehicle safety officer from NZ Police. Should be good to clarify whats happening and how its going to affect us.
What Ive taken from the meeting tonight is pritty much what Coxsy and Ralfie have said in there first posts on Page 1, except the limits of 50mm for non-cert and 100mm max for cert then above that for Authority card Havent been put in writing yet, either has when this is going to go ahead. Although it is likely it'll be within the next year. I personaly dont mind too much as its just following the likes of NZHRA (Hotrod assoc.) and the MSNZ (Motorsport nz) and like the LVVTA guy said its either this or they just limit all lifts to say 100mm and thats it.

Do the above also have a threshold for suspension mods, where if you mod beyond a certain threshold you require an authority card? I thought it was only for roll cages etc? Could be wrong, but I always thought you would be better off betting rid of dodgey certifiers, and keep the LVVC going. I still fail to see how an authority card makes a difference to vehicle safety. Never mind, time will tell I guess.

I also attended the above mentioned meeting. The Authority card is not just about making the vehicles safer but the drivers and owners of lifted trucks responsible for the way it is driven on and off road. The card will be issued to the vehicle in the owners name. This just means that if you belong to a club and use your lifted 4wd for its intended purpose (not just look at me in my stupidly high surf poser stuff) then you shouldn't have any trouble getting the card. Personally I was a bit unsure about the idea until I attended this meeting.
