4wd Light on Dash Flashing

When im in 4wd or supose to be the to front lights on the dash for the 4wd keep flashing but it does seem to go into 4wd its a 1991 swb auto 3L V6 any ideas why this hapens would be good, also as its an auto i was wondering what things i need to do to stop water getting into trans and also diffs electrics ect.

the flashing indicator is very common for pajero, especially that comes from Japan recently.
It was likely the sensor biut nothing worry about. Mine did first few trips, but it settled after that. Mostlikely it was because not much used before..

HI, I am going through the whole flashing lights syndrome myself, and have tracked it down to a faulty air vacuum switch. What it means is there is a discrepancy from where the transfer lever is to whats actually happening in the front diff. My guess is, its flashing when in 2WD and not in 4WD...? It is $200 for a replacement part, Currently I am just switching vacuum lines under the bonnet when I need 4WD.

let us know if you need a hand diagnosing it and how technical I can get... :)

The front and rear diffs and gearbox do have breathers n them, I extended the rear one and the front one goes up onth the inner front guard.

Kewl thanks for the advice, the fornt lights dont come on when in 2wd but when you put it in 4wd they constantly flash? Would this just be something to do with the vacum thing you were talking about? What sort of hose did you use for the brethers? is it a difficult job as in do i have to pull things apart??

isnt there a sender that confirms the front diff is engaged, and the lights flash in 4wd untill the signal is present. could be faulty/gummed up sensor, or front diff not engaging properly

Front diff definitly ingages as have jacked up rear end in 4wd and it creeps along, where abouts are the sensors located?

HI If the front diff definately engages then it sounds like it is a faulty switch on the front axle housing.

When you put the lever into 4H then a switch on the transfer case activates the electric over air solinoid under the brake booster under the bonnet.

This then acticves the disconnect on the drivers side front axle.

So make sure it is definately in 4WD, find some gravel or a hill or get it crossaxled on a road side... (make sure when checking the front end is engaged your transfer lever is in 4HLc or 4LLc to lock the centre diff).

If the front end is definately spinning either the slip joint is not fully meshed or the switch is faulty.

I'll try and get some piccies up of what the axle disconnect looks like in operation, and how the switch works.

Found the vacum hoses on diff there are three that go to under the bonnet 2 go to a couple of black conecter things beside the intake both have different coloured dots on them and the other goes to the brake master cylinder hose which goes to the plenum chamber i think. So how do i find out what isnt working properly??

Yes the hoses - the black connector thingies - those are the vacuum switches that play up and are $200/pair. the yellow one unlocks the front axle and the blue one locks. Pull the plugs out and measure the resistance accross the black connector thingies. Should be about 38 - 45 ohms.

If they are both ok (may need to undoe the two bolts to get a decent reading) then measure the voltage coming from the plugs that you have unpluged to get the resistance. in 2WD the yellow dot one will read 12 - 14 volts and in 4WD vice versa.

But you say it is definately going into 4WD, I suspect the switch on the actual front axle housing, or on top of the transfer case.
