petefj40's new project

Post by petefj40 »

Made you look.

Nothing brought right now. Not till next year. But now is the time to think about the next project. First, what I want it for and second, the budget.
I want it for winch comps and trials. I don't want it road legal.
The budget? As little as possible. Nothing like the last and certainly nothing out there like some on here (looking at you Jim). :D

The last toy, the buggy was fun. But I'm over getting saturated in mud. I want windows and doors. I want it practical but it to have a bit of wank factor too.
After talking to Rick I thought his idea of in bread Toyota-Nissan sounded bloody good. Take a swb patrol, re-power it with a V8 lexus (or LS1 or L98) and throw a FJ40 shell on it. 8)

Your thoughts would be great.
Cheers.
(Pete gets ready for the Nissan vs Toyota shit fight)

sounds like you're going something similar to what I have, ball of fun, reasonable price, has a cab window's and a heater :P
Nice one Pete, keep your eye out for something already well on the way to near what you want and finish it off yourself, I saved myself thousands doing it that way

totally agree with Tim, you should buy something with most of the hard work done unless you are going to be building it yourself. The toyota/nissan your talking about sounds interesting but im sure for you to have it built it would end up costing double what your buggy was worth..

Coz you asked :D .... small budget and building a truck dont go hand in hand, its a buyers market out there so as Tim and Dave said go and find something out there that someones spent moonbeams building and buy it for market value at a fraction of whats been spent on it then fine tune it to suit your preferences

This thing has your name all over it, just needs the body swapped with a stock 40 cab with windows etc..

I hear what you're say re the small budget blow out asking for what I want.
You're right too Tim. The fella that now owns my FJ40 (I still hear from him from time to time. He's still pleased as bunch and so he should be) because he brought it at well under half of the cost of building it.

The buggies Lexus lacked lots of torque compared to the LS1 in the 40. That thing could do wheel stands! But bang for buck you can't beat the Lexus. And it does come down to money at the end of the day.
Bro still has the donor FJ40 in his front paddock. If I'm lucky I'll end up using that shell. Then I'll just have to find a SWB Patrol with good running gear. :D

Next time i'm up at his shop I'll see what i can do...Its a shame you don't like datsuns, he's building a mid wheel base patrol with full coil overs a tube rear end and an LS1. Maybe getting a blower aswell

I'm always keen to see a chevy powered ANYTHING! Specially when it's a blown V8 powered 4X4!!
Jim's blown LS2 powered 4X4 Holden ute beats anything out there right now, specially a blown LS1 powered patrol.

Not into turbo lag.
Jim's got the right idea. Supercharging a V8 4X4 truck.
It's all about high torque at low revs.

his last truck was supercharged his new one is twin turbo.
supercharged was 450hp twin turbo has 800hp potential, initial tune around 550hp and small custom turbos so no lag...it's all about how you build it not just ramming a massive blower on top.

Its been proven that 1uz's make more torque at all revs with turbos over a supercharger, of course it may be quit different with an LS

Pete, a std V8 of almost any marque has plenty of power to clear the treads of a dedicated offroader if the gearing is right, too much power is awesome, but enough will do

TOO MUCH? wash your mouth out. Next you'll be telling us 31 inch AT's are big enough and agressive enough for NZ conditions!!

It'll be running 35's Tim. Simular to the buggy I had. But the buggies V8 Lexus just didn't have enough poke even in the right gear mate. I'm used to having much more. :D

Try running a manual behind it, the autos seem to suck alot of life out of them and don't have the best spread of ratios.

Very good point there.
The only issue with the manual (which I'd prefer to drive) is the clutch plates getting full of mud unless you pressurise the bowl housing. And the auto does make it easier to use fiddle brakes plus it's easier on the drive train.

You can seal the bellhousing up, but don't forget the drain holes from the valley of the engine that drain into the bellhousing.

So far i haven't had any issues with shit getting into my clutch, And they're so much fun to drive with a manual :D

Pete you don't need to pressurise the "bowl" housing lol You just need to seal it so no mud can get in, and provide a vent, much like a diff breather. Its what i did to the bell-housing and gearbox/transfer-case on my jalopy, even underwater for ages while Mudzilla winch my sorry drowned arse out, it didn't get a drop inside. Works a treat..
