2wd steering mod for Terrano

Hi All

Been doing some research on doing the 2WD cross rod and tie-rod conversion to the Terrano. Just wanted to share what I've found and see if anyone has any other comments.

We know when lifting the Terrano and adding bigger wheels, the existing tie-rods just crap themselves after a mild hammering.
Adding the idler arm brace helps fix the idler weak point but the tie-rods need addressing. Seems like the 2WD conversion is a good one, but we would only really know if Simon gave it a good hammering

Anyway, what I've found...
For a 1991 D21 Terrano, the cross rod and tie-rods from a 1988-1994 Nissan Navara D21 2wd will fit right in place of the Terrano's 4WD setup.

When I spoke to Nissan today they had the option of the cross rod having the steering damper mount point or not. This is something I’ve yet to find as being true. Anyway, they were twice the price compared to BNT or Part Master.

Anyone got any comments or further experience on this topic?

I'll be able to tell ya soonish. I've got the bits sitting here waiting for me to fit 'em. The 555 centerlink I got had no damper mount, but nothing the tig couldn't fix....
I guess you've read the threads on the subject on npora?

have been chatting to a guy who had that mod in. he took it out cause he reckoned it had real bad bump steer due to the tie rods not following the same arc as the A arms

Will be interesting to see if anyone else has this issue or wether it was his setup.

Now that's interesting, this is the exact thing all the guys on NPORA say it fixes....I'm guessing he did something wrong.
These things have heaps of bumpsteer stock, I'd hate to think what it'd be like if it was worse

I just got 555 one's from BnT, top quality stuff, made in japan, be good enough to try it out anyhoo.
Was gonna fit it all today, but I can't find a 16.5mm drillbit this morning. Hafta wait till monday to get one...

Most d21s don't have the damper fitted, so no need for the mount...

Good conversion, steers sweet now. Has yet to stand the test of time, but going well. I've set mine up using cheap joints, will replace to higher quality gear if I have issues with them failing early.

So to do this do you need the 2WD centre link plus the 2WD tie rods or can you use the 4WD items with?

I have just replaced my centre link as my old one was bent but now I have very bad bump steer again!!

The listing the parts store is for the same centre link I have just replaced.

Does any one have any part numbers of the items I need for this?

Pretty sure it's TR-680 from repco/appco (camelot part#) for the centerlink and TE-673r for the tie rod ends.
I'll double check on Monday when I'm at work, or you can ask them to have a look and see if they look right....

I can confirm that bumpsteer is actually reduced over stock. I played around on the alignment machine today.....

I have all the parts I need now, Just need to make the adjusters to fit both links.

New center link has no place to bolt a damper to

No they don't have a damper mount. I tigged a mount onto mine (friendly wof guy...) but most guys use exhaust clamps and make something up to bolt on. Look at that npora thread again...

Mine came with the factory dampener mount, but I still need to sort the 2WD TRE's before I can finally complete the mod.
Oh and find someone to cut the threads in the adjuster.

Its simple do it your self it cheap to buy the tap.

If you've got spare adjusters/locknuts you can send them up here (auckland) and I'll do 'em and send them back. Prolly cost lots less in couriers than a 16.5mm drill and 18mm tap....

OK, so after reading a fair bit and talking to lots of people, I've ordered the conversion.

4WD outer Tierods (16mm, left hand threads)
2WD inner Tierods (18mm, right hand threads)
You cannot buy the adjusters as they are not a 'wearable' part apparently.
2WD Centre-Link

So I'll use the adjusters on the existing 4WD setup and just re-tap the right hand threads out to 18mm.

This should do the job I think. Anything I've missed?

Locknuts to suit the larger threads.
Use original 4x4 LH thread 16mm nuts. With any luck the 2wd tie rods will come with matching 18mm RH thread nuts, or you'll need a pair of them too

You can drill and tap the nuts too, that's what I did.
You can get the adjusters off e-bay if you're keen and want spares.

Has yet to stand the test of time, but going well.

Went for a first big drive, and it handled terribly! Was suffering huge (and scary) bump steer at high speed. Didn't notice at slower (50) speed, and was fine in a straight line, but a slight curve with a bump put the nerves up ya, and a bump on a tightish curve really got the sphincter tightening!
How much this is due to wheel alignment being out, I don't know.
One things for sure, I'll be getting a proper wheel alignment before I take it out again!
Then If it fixes it, sweet.
If not, It'll be back to the old system...

My system reduced my bump steer alot. Im not sure what up with yours maybe a good wheel alignment like you are saying will improve things.

Do you know what specs (toe, camber, etc) yours is set at?

I have no Idea it was done by eye. I keep meaning to get a wheel alignment but I am always playing with something and changing it around

Just for a quick check, try the following.

--Camber--
While sitting on a nice level surface, put a level on the front wheels to test the camber. The best way I've found is to have a straight-edge long enough so it rests against the steel/alloy rim and allows you to put a level against it without touching the tyre. This will at least show you how much your camber is out.

--Toe in and out--
It's not the most accurate, but while sitting on a level surface and with the wheels straight, I try and measure from the outside edge of one tyre, to the same position on the outside edge of the other tyre. Then repeat this 180 degress / opposite side of the tyre. This will just show if the front or back edge is toeing in or out.

Gives you some idea anyway, and fixed mine up.

Hey guys

Just been trying to install the 2WD cross-rod and tie-rods. I must have it around the wrong way or something but the angle of the tie-rod doesn't look any better than before.

Anyone got photos of their install?

Because of the taper in the idler and pitman arm holes for the threaded ball joint, to me it looks like you need to flip the idler and pitman arms upside down and then install the cross-rod up from the bottom instead of the top.
This would then put the cross-rod more level with the wheels knuckle-arm. Then the outer tie-rod would still be inserted from the top.
