disco mods and cheap tyres
disco mods and cheap tyres
right well have finally started moding the disco
first things were cutting up front bumper
doing a camel cut
building some quick disconnects for the front sway bar. as removed rear.
pulled off 3.5 ton tow bar and rear bumper as fitting new one tommorow.
built a home made snorkel from some 3 inch alloy pipe and 2 90 deg bends and one 3.9 v8 flexi bend. total cost of $26.45 as got alloy free.
and today have just fitted some 235 85 16s.
were a great price auction = http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 969536.htm
i rang the guy off another listing and did me a great deal including shipping as trademes fees so dam high now.
tyres are great . no road noise. cant wait to get it muddy.
running factory suspension atm. adjusted steering locks so tyres dont rub.
will see if need lift when off road.
list of mods to do now are:
remove mufflers and exit exhuast out side of panel
wanting front bar with winch
and really want a rear locker. but cant decided what one to get and do i really need to spend the coin.
will put pics up tommorow.

You will need to give a 2-inch suspension lift to allow tyres to fit properly when articulating off road. Fit a good aftermarket suspension lift kit and you won't need the front sway bar at all and there no need to modify for disconnects.
The lift kit won't need certifying but the mods to sway bar and disconnects will.
Be interesting how well those tyres work off road as 10 ply seems too stiff even for the weight of a Discovery.
My Discovery had 235x85x16 BFG's on aftermarket rims (better off set), 50mm lift and no sway bars at all. Handled well on road and performed very well off road too.
Good luck with it.

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
alright pics.
rear bumper is quite a tank of a bumper.... but does the trick.
the guy i brought the bumper off had a v8 with the same size tyres. he had just done a 2 inch lift and measured same as mine. ( measured bottom of rim to top of guard). so may have had lift already.
will be cutting snorkel and putting top hat on in next week or so.

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
Verry nice looks like it is just begging for mud.

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
cheers yeah hoping to get some mud on it soon as. wanting to join cloc. just havnt had reply from them yet. as can seem to down load form....
few more pics. had rain day off work so wanted to sort out the little rub it had when full flexed.
amazed as how much better this truck is than my pajero.......
had all mufflers removed and exhuast put out through bumper now.
bit noisy but got a free flow muffler to go in. def seems to spool up quicker now. ( should do as old mufflers were factory and shes got over 300000k now.
and just tonight plumbed waste gate to inlet manifold so engine now getting factory 14psi at head. goes much better even more so after i played with injector pump.(not main mixture screw just boost inrichments)

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
hi mark
yeah no worries. i had to pull off front guard to fitt up. wasnt hard bout 3 hours all up gettin it to work.
under guard is a box channel spot welded to body. i had to remove because of running 3 inch pipe to fitt between guard and body.
you really only need 2 90 degree bends and 1 45 degree. some pipe and hose clamps.
air box has drain holes that have to be sealed up. i know mine is water tight as can put hand over snorkel it stalls the truck and holds suction on.

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
thanks for that. Not quite the setup i was hoping to be able to replicate. There are some (apparently) set up straight below windscreen through a reasonably wide vent panel between screen and bonnet. Need to get a gander at one.

You maybe thinking of the Range Rover set ups which won't work on a Discovery.
Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
Hi mate,
I have a 1996 Disco (my first from a long line of 40 series cruisers) and am about to undertake a bit of a tyre upgrade. I have a couple questions for you.
1. 235/85/16 tyres fit ok without any lift?
2. was thinking 285/75/16 but figure I'd have to lift for these. Any advice around different tyre width etc? I have the same wheels as you
3. It's a little underpowered in factory form for my liking and would like to try and get a bit more out of it without spending big. I'm also new to diesels,so any advice or ideas as to powering the old girl up a bit would be welcomed (3ltr tdi I think, might be 2.4tdi)
Thanks, and nice build so far man, looks good. I like the disco, comfy as a daily and more capable than expected on the tracks.
Cheers,

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
hiyya i am running simex 32' tyres which are half worn now so maybe around 33' actual size.
with a 2' lift from factory,
didnt do camel cut
just used rubber mallet and rolled the alloy inwards at the back about 10mm in and about 80mm up guard, also just chopped front bumper right back
flacked the paint but saved cutting and welding
i brought 15' rims for $100 each new which isnt to bad i thought
removed both sway bars but floats a fair bit so putting front sway bar back in for comfort and because when the front bounces on the road or when braking hard it pulls a fair bit.
The turbo diesel i have heard you can just take then in and have them tuned up a little so best bet is proberly to have a talk to ya local landy guru
or ask someone on here

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
Thanks Anti,
how do you find the performance from the 300tdi pushing simex's? As I use her as my daily, I don't want to go too extreme, but enough to open a few eyes out on the tracks! and enough to get me 90% of places out there. I haven't encountered heaps of mud yet, mostly soft/wet sandy hills and ruts so wondering if I'm better going for a less aggressive MT? Though I do like the look of the Simex and my mate runs a set of 32's on his 40 series back in melbourne and loves them after several other brands. I also like the skinnier profile of them as i don't think the little 2.5ltr would cope with wide tyres.
Thanks again mate and let me know of any sweet tracks/trips from Auckland too!

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
OK so went for a set of 235/85/16 nankang mud stars (couldn't resist $190 a tyre fitted and balanced)! Now about to attempt the camel cut to eliminate the rubbing. Do you have any pics of yours being done? Cheers.
Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
mines the 3.9 v8 and find they a little big for on road may need gearing down for everyday use
tyres are pretty noisey and wear fast on the road
but in the mud the are pretty much the best
i wouldnt buy them for my dayly driver but as im a farmer and use it to get to run off and for weekends pretty much not a prob
oh and they do float round abit
if that helps
keep it up and get it dirty

Re: disco mods and cheap tyres
ok been a while and done a few mods to the girl. not quite there yet but close.
so far have put in full front mount intercooler. fitted egt, and boost gauge. wound fuel up and boost. goes great now. egts are good even towing. still great on fuel (unless booting it every where)
opened up exhuast
built a front bar for it and fitted winch.
built a rear wheel rope, spade and axe holder
brought a custom rear bar and fitted.
rear diff locker ordered. just waiting to find a diff head to fit it to.
and in process of building a roof tray.
