Terrano LSD Differences
Howdy folks, just after some more information...
So i went and brought two lsd units for my terrano, one whole diff head, and one carrier.
But when the rear diff head came out its axle, it has the same carrier.
im a bit confused at this as i saw the front safari open carrier, and well, its quite literally open..
my r200a diff that came out of the front also has a similar carrier as the lsd carriers,
so im starting to wonder if my truck had front and rear LSD?

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
Looking at the unopened carrier unit, there are two designs. One you can easily see the spider gears inside, the other you can't. The Lsd carrier looks very similar to the one you can't see the spider gears. So more than likely you've got the stronger housing, just not lsd.
Hope that makes sense?

Sounds right, same for toyota hilux diffs too, bigger bearings as well etc

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
All depends on whether there are 2 spider gears or 4. An open 4 spider Nissan diff looks almost identical to the LSD model - if you know what you are looking for you will see the locators for the clutch packs on the LSD diff otherwise open them both up one will have several clutch packs behind the side gears the other won't. An open 2 spider diff is as you said completely open (i,e you can look straight through it)
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
yea i had a look at the other one and there are no clutch packs in it.
well cheers for clearing that up guys, ill see how it runs with the new lsd in it and see how far i can make it.

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
If you want it to run really well add one extra clutch plate to each side then it will behave almost like a fully locked diff at low speeds.
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
where abouts can i buy clutch plates from?
ive been searching for a while and the only place i have found them is in the u.s

Done done this to tighten the r200 LSD on my silvia. Got the shims from Nissan. Were bout $17 each. Did tighten it up nicely but now 2years latter after lots of track days has got lazy again

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
My local nissan dealer has never been that keen on supplying diff parts - I am just lucky that I have an old diff that I can burgle parts from. After 2 years of hard driving would suggest that at the least it will be due a fluid change if not a full strip down, as a side note the clutch plates and shims are the same in most Nissan LSD's so can be interchanged.
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
sweet as, i rung up nissan and they said 130 bucks for a set. is that a good price?
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
Still fairly cheap traction (you would struggle to buy a 2nd hand diff for that money). If you are buying parts and have the diff in bits buy new thrust washers as well.
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
accually come to think of it do you know a good place to get new carrier bearings?
ive tried repco but they dont know what i mean.
its to put an lsd carrier into the front of a safari.

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
Try BNT or an outfit that specializes in bearings. What model Safari do you have? If you have the right model of LSD and bearings are in good shape, you may just be able to bolt straight in. I did this mod and would suggest you avoid making it to aggressive. As it will make your turning circle appalling, will also sledge straight ahead, wear quickly and be prone to crabbing on side slopes particularily if you have played with your rear diff also.
Re: Terrano LSD Differences
i havnt played with the lsd units themselves, but its something im looking at doing in the future if i dont like the ones in it.
ive got a terrano that has a safari front axle under it, and ive got 2 terrano lsd carriers, one already in the rear.
i do have a spare 33 spline safari rear unit though, maybe i could use the bearings off that? ive also got a spare open rear terrano diff too, same type of carrier as the lsd.

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
Repco etc are rubbish to try and buy bearings from, BNT = brake n trans, these people dont carry bearing stock - they buy them in and put 20% handling fee on. Dont get me wrong BNT are great for their core product (master n slave clyanders, brake pads, clutches, fluids etc), I brought some oil at repco on sale once... Let your fingers do the walking under bearings in the yella pages, my discount at BNT varies from which CHCH store I go to (I now drive straight past the first one, its not worth asking the self important sales rep...) For the clutch plate email Nissan dealers in the main centers as freight cant be much on them.
Try Saeco /South Island Bearings etc, try being cheeky an pushin for a discount - its like askin a lady for sex, 'no' dosnt hurt your feelings that much

Re: Terrano LSD Differences
Have a go at getting the bearings off without damaging them. Or it is possible you may be able to swap the internals and crown wheel over to the diff head with the good bearings. If you have a spare diff head you will also have a good source of additional clutch plates add one extra to each side of your rear diff and leave the front LSD standard.
