G16A won't Satrt

Post by lincooln »

Ok, so I was playing round with my windows on the Suzuki, wired in a new switch for the drivers side and it all good now. Had to go pick up my brother from the ferry, that went all good. Went to start it at the ferry and it wouldn't. Still had power but not even the solenoid was clicking. Roll started it with help form the friendly security guard.

At home I tested the solenoid activation wire, and the most I saw from it on the volt meter was 10.72V for a very short time then each time you tried it would have less volts. Leave it for 5 min and it was back to the 10V.

Only click you here is form the ignition barrel and a very quiet tick from the engine bay. Sounds like when you don't have the activation wire attached.

I have checked all the grounds, fuses, power connections etc. So kinda stumped. Any body have a clue? I need it going as soon as possible

Cheers

know naf about suks so no insight there. process of elimination. you dont have consistant power from switch side could be various things. as you need your wheels put a wire directly from solanoid on starter so that under bonnet you can touch wire direct to battery and reliably get going. That works? next stop for me would be power down from ignition. into back of ign switch and see what voltage comes out starter wire. does starter have a relay? points ignition? ballast resistor?

hey thanks man.

I managed to get going with wacking the shit out of the solenoid in a temper with a bit of wood and a hammer. It must be sticking as it works for a bit then it jams back up again. It was just weird it doesn't even click.

if your only seeing 10.7 volt on the solenoid wire it would imply that you have leakage or loss in the electrical system , maybe the start relay is on its way out .

Hook a wire onto the solenoid and directly tap it onto the battery +, solenoid should click and starter spin .
If it doesn't click its the solenoid , if it does click and motor doesn't turn its the motor .
If starter works fine its the electrical system .

Also check your earths are good , on the battery and on the engine block .

no click doesnt mean solenoid faulty..if you bash it and it goes you will have worn out brushes..stop bashing and fix it or youll fu*k the armature, if you havent already...

solenoid has two internal windings the main pull in winding intially earths through the motor(and brushes) then the hold in that earths through the housing...

10.7 volts to the excite terminal is too low really.easy solution is to fit a sub start relay or solenoid. the 10.7v will switch a relay easy as that can then switch battery voltage to your starter....

Edit should say to fix the low voltage first.if you need to no how to hook up a sub start relay let me know..

thanks for the suggestions guys. Will have to give them a try tomorrow when it gets light.

Sounds like I have more shit to fix with no money. Bloody typical.

just a sujestion bro as no one has said it yet.
check ya battery is in good condition
check that both bat terminals are clean and tight on the posts.
check all conections to starter and earths are good and tight.
otherwise yea what everyone else has said

but definatly as skidmark said dont smak the cap outa the starter you will break it!!! (tapping the solinoid lightly while someone is turning the key can sometimes assist the contacts to work)
