WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
As per title
Also, Toyota P/N show that rear 4.1 and 4.8 Elocker cast housings are different. A while back, I made a 9mm spacer to go behind crownwheel, so a mate could use standard 4.8 hilux gears in an origanally 4.1 locker. He's only running a 2.4t, and I don't really want to do this, so what I'm asking is.... Is there a different 4.8 gear set that fits the 4.1 rear Elocker? (as I can get a 4.1 rear Elocker)

I was wondering if this is an option. I want to do the same to my 4.3 elocker. R the after market 4.8s much thicker then the factory ones? Did u just get a set of 4.8 and do the same in the front? or did u put a factory 4.8 front in? Cheers

My front hi pinion Elocker was a 4.1 and the 4.8 gears fitted fine. The hi pinion 4.8 gears are quite a bit thicker than standard 4.8's. The rear seems a different story. I have the same question as you axel, Can you get 4.8 gears that have a thicker crown wheel than standard hilux?

In my case I got a whole front diff from the 2.4L Prado... Which is 4.88 out of the box...
From what I understand the open and lsd rear factory 4.88 used in the 2.4L Prado is an odd ball diff an uses a thin r and p....
All the elockers use thick or normal r and p's...

Is your front diff out of an 80series Jeremy? I thought u had lsd's front and rear? So does that mean u modified ur front housing to take the locker head?
And were ur hi pinion 4.8s out of a lj71/78?
Calvin I thought the lj 4.88 rear locker also had a thin ring gear? Either way you imported urs and put it in a 4.3 elocker no probs so it would probably b less effort for me to do the same.

I did have lsd front and rear, front was a hi pinion from an lj78, now have elocker front from an 80 that i fitted the 4.8's to. I altered my housing to suit http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 8&start=45 (was a hilux housing) With my limited knowledge, I begining to believe all toyota hi pinion (reverse cut)8inch 4.8 gears are the same.
I still want to confirm if you can get 4.8 gears that have a thicker crown wheel than standard hilux, that fit a 4.1 rear elocker?

Nice work. I must have missed that on ur build thread. Am looking at doing the same but havnt found an 80series front slicker for the right price. Just missed one the other week for $695! Bargain. How much did u pay for urs? Yea looking at part numbers on toyodiy open and elocker 4.8 fronts use the same part for r and p so I guess they r the same.
Ur 4.1 rear elocker out of and 80 too? 9"?
Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
Elocker not slicker (####### auto correct!)
Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
Don't have a rear yet, but was investigating a 8inch 4.1 elocker hopping to convert to 4.8. Well I was pretty sure it was an 8inch, cos I want to fit it into a surf rear housing.

Email this guy in the states.
http://www.gearinstalls.com/
Email is at the bottom of the page. Zuk is the name.
Explain to him what you are wanting to do...I have emailed him over the years re my e locker gear change.
I am sure all e lockers in 8 inch, use thick rings....
Its only the rear open and lsd diffs in one factory ratio which is thin.... and very hard to re gear... (ie the rear 4.88 diffs)

Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
Hey Jezza
As I understand it the e-lockers use the "V6" style CW & Ps, which are the thicker ones.
When I bust a tooth off my 4.3 e-locker rear pinion, likely snatch towing, I installed a standard style thinner CW & P. I had it in stock, from a van.
Being a non standard fitment, it involved some machining. It is a few years ago now, however I think it was the fore and aft placement of the pinion. Where there is normally some shim adjustments, I made a thicker shim, say 5 or 6mm, on my lathe.
When setting the diff up, I also took the time to make a solid pinion spacer. To date, 50,000 kms later, I have had no probs and currently I am hauling logs a lot, using my -71 as a skidder.

Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
HI I have a factory 4.88 e-locker out of a LJ71 prado. The crown wheel is the same thickness as the late model 4.56 V6 which i got out of a 2wd 2.8 hiace. I was going to convert the e-locker to 4.56 but ended up buying a detroit locker instead. From what i've read and the shitload off diffs i've pulled apart and rebuilt the only 4.88's that were narrower that the yanks talk about are the diffs in early LN65 and 46 series hilux's. If you were to use a V6 4.88 out of a LJ prado or a 4wd 2.8 hiace (mostly V6 housings) the crown wheel should fit straight into the e-locker housing.
Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
Cheers guys, all helpful info, am trying to get my hands on associated bits, and try my luck.

Re: WTD: Prado Rear Elocker, 4.8
Keep us posted, look forward to seeing how you get on.
Not sure if this helps but there seem to be two rear diff gear options for the lj78. Both 4.8's as per part numbers http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_1993_T ... 101.8.html . Got one of the guys at work to translate the bit at the end of part 41201-69425 and apparently is says it's for diff lock. So I guess there is a ring and pinion for the e locker and 1 for open? For the lj78 anyway
