Re: 1990 TUF LUX
nothing major but work at least.clutch master has now been fitted to the firewall after finding the arbour for the hole saw
,bit more wiring removed and then some of the after market wiring from original body put back in along with the 1st battery so cab now has power.also picked up a new 7qt capacity sump with fresh gaskets and new pick up,really hoping this set of gaskets will fix the oil leaks i had but not holding my breath
and then lastly tonight got the motor back out and on the stand ready to get cleaned up a bit before its final instalment. due to family commitments this was the 1st lot of work in 2 n 1/2 weeks, here's hoping it ain't that long till I get some more done

have you worked out what sort of clutch your going to stick in it, I went through a few different clutch combinations in both of my trucks to find something that holds with bigger tyres and dosent spin up when you try and feed it some jandal

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
hey sadam, sorry for the late rely, had to dig the clutch out of the shed.since i've had the motor its been running a valeo phc clutch with exedy disk with ISD033U which is apparently for an isuzu elf
on a 14" fly wheel.so far ive had no issues with clutch slip but I think that's probably more due to the different terrain we play in, I do a lot in sand on a/t's with very little mud so far, your more mud with simex type tyres aren't you so that could be it. I'm hoping to get hold of some simex or creepys once the trucks back on the road then will have to see how the clutch holds up

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
well been a very slow month with 2 out of town trips for funerals,a birthday and generally a lot of other crap getting in the way of build.have managed to get new extra capacity sump fitted with new pick up which needed major mods as the Chinese just couldn't get it right,at all,in any such way shape or form
.but then tonight when the brother n law and I assembled flywheel and clutch etc it turns out the nice new $750 bell housing I purchased doesn't actually fit a 14" flywheel like it should so no motor will be in or running this weekend, instead I'll need to machine it out slightly and be fitted next weekend ...great start to this weekend yeah bloody right but still 2 days to go so will see what happens.and of course some Monday ill be chasing the guy who sold it to me for a partial refund as it was supposed to be a bolt in part

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
ok finally making some progress.after finding bell housing wrong 2 weeks ago i took it into work and machined out the sides so bell housing fitted over flywheel.i then tried fitting starter which still made contact with side of housing so machined that for clearance.refitted housing and starter almost cleared but not quite.by this stage patients was short so battery and jumpers and the starter was used to blue in the clearance
after which I used die grinder to get it to fully clear.i also spun up a custom spigot bush out of acetal as i couldn't find any bronze...hopefully it'll last
.so i then fitted and torqued up fly & clutch.then went to fit slave to bellhousing and to no suprise it was in the wrong orientation as the mounting face was below the gap instead of above so.......went and found slave that would work.then got it sleeved and attached to housing then finally last night
GOT THE MOTOR IN
also picked up some springs today for the front end and tonight's plan is to weld up mounts for the engine side and then eye up and fab engine mounts for the chassis side.and maybe just maybe it might run tomorrow
who wants to put bet I can mount it and get it running, ill bet I cant

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
yeah fail on mounts or running.went to use the welder and she had no gas, well enough to tack 1st mount together but then ran out
i've really got to start checking gauge more often
.before i got to that though i pushed truck outside and threw some panels on the front as well as refitting the 35s to the front now that motors back in for good to get some motivation

and then some pics of motor and work done over last 2 weeks
new sump all sorted

this is how the slave ended up,literally just fitted into where it needed to go

and here's the bell housing where you can see what needed machining out to make work

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
well another couple of weeks since last post.engine is now fully mounted plus runs mint as well.ignition and starter all wired to key again as well as tacho and gauges all sorted.got to love carbs ae.sat for over a year, bolt the thing back on and away she went
.still need to flush fuel tank though and hook up motor to as I'm still currently running off the coke bottle hanging from the front of chassis
.rear diff had head popped out, sealed up then filled with oil and drive shaft in then got a braided clutch line sorted as well, fits ok but will get 2 90deg swivel elbows for it this week to make fit even better,so bleed that and managed to drive truck in and out of the garage which felt great.1st time in over a year so its good to have her mobile again.also got disk brake brackets and hub spacers all sorted so front diff rebuild will hopefully begin soon along with rear disc conversion.also all of original exhaust went back in an fits reasonably.the motor isn't sitting exactly where it was so from pipes from headers to xflow will need tweaking slightly but yeah.still a lot less work then a full new set up.and lastly have ripped apart dash and have begun the task of reinstalling sterio / cb and all the switches that used to be in there...
think that's about all but the main thing is I'm still moving forward

haven't got any pics at the moment but can tell you its no more than 15mm
, I run the electric fan on the front and to get water capacity up I have a 4l stainless tank in-line between radiator output and water pump input

Thought about putting the radiator on the back?

have indeed mate but still not too sure about it.it runs cool as it is and am hoping 4.1s and bigger gearbox which will lower revs will help even more.in saying that you never know.also spare wheel will be taking up a lot of deck space...who knows

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
well its ben a while, been getting quite a bit done over last few weeks, and am now currently half way through a week off work, still have 3 days to go.engines been mounted for a while now and running.here's the mounts

ive now got all the dash wiring reinstalled and run to where it needs to be within the truck.2nd battery tray all sorted and put in along with relay box which to do so also involved delooming the engine bay of all the old wires that went to old motor

after that ive got electric fan back in and wired up,just have to install temp switch now and that'l be complete.for those that commented earlier here's some pics.fan in place, you can also see the stainless tank hanging down the bottom, that's now been bolted back up into the chassis rails (well just below but its never been hit where it is and this time ill be making a guard to cover it up)

and also the gap between rad and pulley.was 15mm as i remembered

ive also got the gearbox mount bolted in properly now after cleaning up the threads which were caked in mud along with the remaining xmember bolts, again which involved cleaning out the threads
.from there i moved onto exhaust which was now making contact with the body after dropping body lift to 2".that involved moving mufflers back 100mm so they tucked up into the back seat cavity.all that's left to do now is finish off where the pipes dump just behind the diff head.
ive also made good progress on back end.the final cut has been made to the body which has made it look a lot more in proportion along with the hole opened up to fit the sliding window correctly.ive got the deck frame welded up & deck surface from 21mm ply cut

and this is it with the spare on where it will go

and with the boxes I'm potentially going to be using (they're the brother n laws old boxes and currently have no use so I'm just trying to decide if I like the look of them or not)

ive also got to figure out weather i put dive tank on deck or behind the back seats but I like the idea of having dry storage space so thinking it'll go on deck somewhere.as well as that ive flex tested the rear and all is clear, bunp stops work and shocks have been measured up.i can only fit 10" in there under full compression but will loose 3" of down travel so I'm currently thinking of new shock mounts and how to make it work to fit some 14s in there.
oh and the 80series fuel tank will be pulled out next weekend and replaced by a 140L custom fuel cell
.2 reasons for this.1 with the 80s tank it has to go in from the top meaning once decks welded on it'll never come out so that's no good
and 2 with new fuel cell I'll have a nice long range tank which in theory will get me to Wellington on 1 tank
man that's a lot of typing
,enough for now anyway

yeah it would, fronts still to be pushed forward 70-100mm when the solid axle goes in and the rear maybe be pushed back could be an option but would involve A LOT of work and not too sure it'd be worth it for the hassle.but cheers for the input, you're the only comment in over a hundred views so I'll take it on board

I like the boxs. I say if you have a roll bar behind cab pipes that run off to back of tray on same angle as them boxs (ild do a paint edit but on my cell). Thenmount spare againest head board and your have room for another box or chilly bin

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
madlux, yeah did think about length of deck, pics don't quite show it but it wont make contact with deck before chassis and unless I go up an extremely steep hill I shouldn't run into any trouble
and surf 10,haven't seen you're truck yet,ill have to go for a look now
and i'm thinking so too tom.with any luck ill get that before i head back to work Wednesday.yeah I'm still deciding on those side windows ae.filling them in would be the easiest option but am still thinking of maybe running just a glued in Perspex type panel.was going to talk to the certifier about it when i catch up with him next
and yeah the boxes are growing on me kiwi terrano.and yes they'l be a roll bar behind cab with x braces and then 2 stays down to deck like you.only thing I don't agree on 100% is the spare against headboard.its great for making more room but then you loose a lot of view out the back.my thoughts though for gaining deck space is a swing arm that would lie flat on deck when I don't need space and then could be pinned up vertical and expose the full deck when I needed it..again though still just thoughts in the head
cheers for the comments guys.maybe other people who have spares up against back window could comment on their experience with lack of view?or weather it didnt effect their driving all that much?

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
My friend has done similar but used the original ass end and a very short tray. Not sure what hes planning on doing with a spare, standing up is about the only option on his.

My deck on my truck is similar to yours but with a rollbar, I have a long toolbox behind the cab with the spare behind that, but anything bigger than my 31"s and it would be handing over the back. I like those side mount toolboxs, would be a much better use of otherwise not really usuable space

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
definately fill in them rear window holes, i personally think would look wrong if you filled it with glass, if I was doing it I would trying to be making it look like a factory double cab as much as possible, obviously with your own custom ideas thrown in the mix but getting too freaky can make it look too mixed n matched, if you know what I mean.. but realy we are all different so what ever suits you

cheers for that 3VILC.the boxes making use of that space is exactly why they're growing on me.and yeah for your mate really standing up behind window is only option and then renders window useless which is why I'm trying to find a way around it.my deck will end up with similar bar work to yours and ive considered a very similar set up,just these boxes are available...time will tell
and cheers Jarred.you've just confirmed what i was thinking which was it would be too far of a compromise.filling her in was always going to be the easiest anyway
cheers for all comments guys, keep them coming

Can you cut a scalop in the deck so that the tyre can stand up but mostly below the window line?

Re: 1990 TUF LUX
to be honest, i'm not a fan on the 'guillotine ute chop' type look.. would ya possibly angle the rear to match where the windows originally ran? straight up from the deck, then follow where window ran parallel with upper door jam...? sort of a cross between where youre goin and 3VILC's mate..
as for the rear mounted tyre for visibility issue.. ive got my 37 on the back and although it looks like it'd hinder my rearward viewing, its surprisingly not that bad.. good when tow stroppin someone as provides a bit of shelter.. heh heh..

could you angle your spare tyre?
