All terrains for my Surf

Post by upstream »

I'm a rank newbie at this so please keep your answers simple  I'm attending an Agribusiness 4x4 safety course in November so should have some more clues after that.

I'm looking for some on-road off-road tyres for my 94 surf. 15 inch rims 31.10.5

I'm not planning any major off-roading, most is on-road but I do get out into the backcountry in search of trout. Mostly farm tracks, but also mild off-roading.

I've had the following quotes from Budget Tyres:
Hankook Kingstar RF03 $179
Hankook Z36 $210
GT radial Savero $185
Sava $175

Beaurepairs quoted the following:
Wrangler ATR $275

Any suggestions? I'm leaning toward one of the Hankooks.

be carefull with AT's as thhey are not all equal. Youy will need strong sidewalls if you are geting into the rivers, I looked at these before I went to mud's.

They are a really well made tyre and the side wall lugs mean you can climb out

Also they deliver for a good price.

Australian 4wd monthly liked the Pirelli Scorpion AT out of the tyres it tested recently, even better than the BFG AT's. Still they are probably very expensive.

I run a set of RMT's on my hilux. They seem to grip reasonably in the mud, and last for a good period of time on the road. I have found the compound to be reasonably hard, so maybe not as comfortable ride as the BFG etc...

my 2c...

pirelli scorpion AT's are a very reasonable price, i would say even cheap and if any of the good feedback they have had is true then i would go that way. BFG AT's are absolute shit if you ask me, they get to about half worn and then the plys seperate and you end up with a bulged tyre,im not saying they all do it but i have seen(and had) a lot of them do it, and they arent even very well priced.or go for a Khumo AT, they are also a very good tyre

just my $1.25 less gst

my old man had bfg ATs on his prado. they were a gread tyre for an AT they had heaps of grip and good side wall grip to. he did 80000ks on a set and my uncle did 95000 ks on a set but that was mainly open road. they are quite expensive though.

I live near Pirongia, going for a fish up the top of the Waipa river this weekend. Hopefully I don't get stuck like last time - farmer had to pull me out in his tractor

I am very happy with the Scorpions. They look fantastic with great big white lettering - chicks dig it!

We went out on Sunday, bit of drizzle and light rain but a fair bit of water around by the time we had to leave. The track down to the river was quite steep over gravel, wet grass and and a little mud. Absolutely zero signs of slippage. So perfect for my purposes.

The river is stunning, we caught a few fish but nothing big, will try again in December.

I have a pic but not sure how to post.

I did a 4WD course last weekend and had cool fun in my Surf. It peed all day so plenty of mud, but very happy with the performance of the Scorpions, got stuck just once in some pretty thick mud, but very good for AT's I woulda thought.

Just sent you the pics Wopass, please post for me.[/img]

Thanks for posting the pics wopass.

Yeah, very happy with them (in my limited experience). Very good grip offroad except in the real mud. Maybe slightly more road noise than my road tyres but I can't even hear them now. And they are very good looking.

Will just have to see how well they last.

Now time to start thinking of some basic modifications for the Surf
