Retro fit a turbo to a TD42
Retro fit a turbo to a TD42
LWB Patrol 5 speed manual.Does anybody know of anyone that has had this option done to thier truck? Was it worth it,did it run cleaner etc?talked to an outfit on the Nth Shore, approx $4800 drive in drive out. With new exhaust etc.does this sound like a reasonable price?Cheerz..
From what i"ve heard yes to all.

Cheerz DB.I tried that site, but my comuter is not on the same script as that forum.locks up on me.Shame, cause that is a dedicated patrol site.I`m in no hurry for an retro turbo fitting.happy to plug away with what I have for the time being.Still, would be great to have the extra grunt to overtake on the open highway, towing etc...
onya DB.Found away around that script problem.Found a site that did a comparison test with the TD42.One was with a regular turbo kit.The other with the intercooled kit. What a difference these units make to performance. The intercooled option in particular.Obviously the intercooler cost even more.Heavy duty clutch for starters.Be around $7500 to be done here.Turns out the site says a local diesel pro is an installation agent for the safari turbo kits. Will try and get back to you with the review url...
A friend of ours has just done his Nissan, and made it into a weapon off road. Running 12 pound, it goes so well now, and not to mention he loves it on road now, passing is able to be done! With towing or anything, it is just so much easier, his went from 73hp at the wheels (or something like that) to 130 at the wheels. It is not intercooled
With the Safari kits, I know an intercooler gets a whole heap more power BUT if you have a pto winch you can't have both...
However with so many different intercoolers available and the ability to make them up im sure where there's a will, there's a way!

SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods

Nah, i don't want a Turbo
.
My last two vehicles have been Turbo Charged, and i wasn't really that impressed.
Autobox and a turbo i would like to try for a while though.
New injectors, advanced injector timing and a straight through pipe is all the performance gains i need in the Safari!!
Very curious as to why you can't run the intercooler with the PTO!!
Where exactly is it supposed to sit??
On top of the motor, or infront of the radiator??
Either way all you got beneath the engine bay, about mid way up the sump is a small shaft running from the gear box under the radiator to the winch.

My patrol has 350,000kms.The dude from APS safari kit, says to retro a turbo on a rig with this many Ks is not unheard of.But he did recommend the engine has what he called a `freshen up`.makes sense I `spose.Been told this engine can go 1million + Kms if serviced correctly. If this is the case I`m less than a third of the way there. It never ends does it.New gear/tools/gadgets.All of them and none of them are must haves.Still, it`s gotta be good 4 ya....
As long as your engine isn't on deaths door. Its always good to run your engine in a bit before you turbo them. Thats just a wives tale.
TD42 is a strong engine. You gotta run over 20psi boost before they really start to fall apart. We set both TD42's up around 15 pound boost. Did a mitsi Triton with a Safari kit too. Thats still kinda going. Onto its third gearbox. Just wasn't built for the power.

Jungle:That boost PSI advice you gave is great. You will not be in the `Good books` with my wife from now on.Having done these retrofits,I like your positve spin.I was thinking,as to buying a gruntier truck(of which I can`t be sure of it`s servive history)that a turbo upgrade on my current truck, could be a safer bet.I read on another 4x4 site, that the TD42 N/A is upto 30% under `stressed`.If this proves to be true, then there is plenty of room for an upgrade, with way less engine deterioration than other engine/model classes.I`m new to this, but it is exciting to know ones options.Have`t been trained as of yet in 4x4 off road skills. But I do like the prospect of not being a burden to other road user`s towing boats etc on the `seal`..
