Auto Hubs

Post by BogBoy »

Hey all

Just took my truck on a rather wicked drive into the mountains...

Got half way up and found my front hubs were not locking in.....

Carried on to the hut and the jacked it up, Took the passengers side off to find it had no grease at all and was seized too.

Snow was getting worse so I put it back on and drove back down.

Got it home and I cant get it to work at all plus now the A.T.P light has come on just as I put it into park in the drive way.

Any ideas?

I want to get manual hubs but cant afford them at the moment so I need to fix/replace these

the A.T.P light means theres something wrong with the park mechanism.

with the hubs, was the other one engaging properly? as it may has something to do with the transfercase.

Ok so should I strip both sides down and soak them over night in parts clean?

What should I look for from the trans case to cause the problem?

definitly sounds like the transfer case has packed up.

only way to tell is if you pull it out and test with a good one..

Put it in neutral, 2wd. Clamber under ur wagon, and spin the front driveshaft. If auto hubs are all-good then after a rotation or so, you'll notice each autohub click and lock, thus stopping axle spinning (wheel still on ground).
when the 2nd auto hub locks then you won't be able to turn driveshaft anymore. (try the same spinning driveshaft other way also to confirm)
Then you know auto hubs are good, and problem lies in transfer.
Or if you got a flat area, trolley jack up the rear and put in 4x4 and try drive. If no drive then 4x4 then getta mate to check what driveshafts/axles are (or aren't ) spinning.
That should find it for ya,
Nath

Ok so update time

Was out side fixing a customers car and had to move my 4wd to get it closer to the shed

Heard a really really bad sound, I had heard this sound before on a customers hilux that he had smashed a outer cv joint on.

So I jacked it up, Spun the front drive shaft and heard the noise again....

My outer passengers side cv joint is smashed to bits.............. FARRRKKKKKK!!!

Stripped the auto hubs off and found the drivers side is still working well plus it has grease in it to un like the passenger side.

Rang a wrecker to get a price on a set of manual hubs and got told $350...

I then told him that I can get a set from trademe brand new for $249, He hung up on me........

Does any one have a set I can buy? :D

Could be keen!!

Umm so I hit a snag.... Went to the parts store today (appco) and the price for a CV joint is $83.20, I live with that.

Problem is they no longer stock them and neither do repco
