Pivot steer truck at Sheffield mud plug

Post by muddyplumber »

So went out to the mud plug for a look see.(this isn't a dig at the guy or his truck) when I was there saw this navara looking ute thing with pivot steer n think it had a v8 in it,looks like a heap of work has gone into building it.when I saw it turning it just looked like a bad idea as when you turn one way,the gap between the wheels closes up on one side then opens up on the other side, wouldn't it make it prone to rolling over if you were playing round on hills etc.then later in the day I saw it had,had a roll over and the guy was really lucky as it happened in a water stage.guys who went out, what did you think of it?is pivot steer bad off road?

Was a pivot steer haflinka (sp?) doing the trials circuit 20-30 years ago - saw it on TV abck when offroading was mainstream tv and not frowned apon by the sandle wearing masses.

Its the same principle as a forestry tractor aka "skidder", i work in forestry and have a bit of experience operating one. And the answer is no, not good for hills, excellent on the flat for towing heavy loads as there is no understeer, turns sharp and has awesome flex as each end can pivot, so for driving over stumps etc, whenever a skidder rolls in the bush 90% of the time its from turning up when 90 degrees to a slope, ive had a few scares myself

That will be Syd D'Atrh's rather modified Haflinger, won a few rallys in its day. I believe Steve McMinn in Auckland now owns it.

Looking at the vid... The front wheels don't turn at all..... Just the pivot in the middle...Or can the front be locked out??? You loose soooo much steering.

pivot steering is good in concept.you get tighter turns without worrying about cv operating angles.the problem with the setup in the video is that he doesnt appear to have enough weight in the rear section to get any grip.with a rigid chassis there is weight transfered from corner to corner.in his setup it looks like the rears are just sitting there spinning because instead of the wheels being forced into the ground the rear section just articulates.it might work better with a heavier spring in the pivot.good effort though thinking outside the box
