Cheap Snatch Straps ??

That's makes some good reading, Orange 10,000 cheapy from SCA. I always thought mine had buggar all stretch in it - haven't really given it a good test to be honest.

I definately never knew there was a difference between poly or nylon.

Sad to say it but everything I have written here is a summary of what I have previously written for the NZ4WD magazine over the years. Its all info that has been published and readily available.

Just came back from super cheap Mt Wellington, and those 9m 10000 kg polyester recovery strap (with snatch strap written on the side) are on special for $20 bargain!!

Now I feel really ripped off!! Ha ha live and learn.

There are also full price nylon ones.

The 8000kg would be better as stretches easier and Nylon stretches more.

No, its the fibre that it is made from that allows it to stretch not the load rating.

In Summary;
Only use nylon, whether it be rope or webbing strap as only nylon has the stretch ability to reduce shock loading on recovery points and uses the build up of kinetic engery to get a vehicle unstuck.

You and me both. Think I paid close to $70 for the polyester one I got for "research" purposes.

Broke my 9metre cookes rope two weeks ago pulling a 12 metre rimu log stuck in sand out of the sea . It took one hell of a hiding and was about 15 years old. It only broke where clowns I had towed out had driven over the strop damaging the nylon fibres thats why I used to charge them 20bucks if I didnt know them . I will be replacing it with another cookes snatchmaster soon as .

A Cheap snatch strap from the imfamous Offroader traders you can now have a snatch strap made of both polyester and nylon together and get low elongation yet have 20% stretch.

It must be true as they offer "expert advice"

Retailers need to be held accountable for the products they sell.

couple of things too add here.
NZ4WDA membership gets 10 or 15% discount from cookes. we do actualy get a little something back from them . secondly retailers generally are just repeating what is the manufactures blurb. possibly shouldnt be. they also dont necesarily get too test everything they sell.
bought a 4 metre thick diameter blue round" snatch" Rope from 4wd bits years ago and and first yank had it delegated too on road tow rope only, which its perfect for. 4wd bits no longer sells them. point being anyone want too say Warren (4wdbits) dosnt know what he is on about. Just like us retailers get caught out too

Warren and I had this discussion regarding his polypropylene ropes a few years back. It was good to see them eventually dropped from the 4WDBits catalogue.

The original round blue ropes we sold were called 'polypropylene' and actually worked really well as a snatch rope, used them myself on both ends of countless recoveries.

For whatever reason subsequent blue 'polypropylene' had very little stretch despite the manufacturer saying it was the same stuff, which is why we dumped it.

Anyone want some tow ropes?
