Re: Camel Trophy History
I've got a DVD of the 1987-89 events...awesome stuff.
87 is Rangie classics, but the 88/89 events with the 110 Defenders make for good viewing

Re: Camel Trophy History
What a shame to see it end that way.
Started off with some serious offroading hard yakka and ending with some hippies playing in the snow, with freelanders!! (no wonder they had to take there bicycles with them)
Cool video, thanks.

Re: Camel Trophy History
Camel Trophy was originally a promotional thing for RJ Reynolds the manufacturers of Camel Cigarettes. When it become unpopular to promote smoking they formed a company called Worldwide Brands which marketed Camel Adventure wear and clothing and used a very similar logo to the Camel cigarettes.
Eventually they got too much bad publicity over the 'destruction' of the environment despite their efforts to return something to the area they travelled through such as building research stations and helping villages along the way.
In its peak there were thousands of applicants quering up for the selection process to be picked to be part of the event each year.
I have all the original videos and DVD's from these events which went from 1981 through to 1998 (when the Freelander was used).
I then went a step further and bought one of the actual event vehicles.

Brilliant...what vehicle have you got? And, are there DVD's of the '84, '85, or '86 events? I'd be keen to get ahold of them somehow

Re: Camel Trophy History
Thats awesome. When i was a kid i used to alternate between the Camel Trophy and the Paris Dakar each time we went to the video store. They used to tell me you have already hired that one before haha. Think i started in 1987 with the Madagascar one. Probably can't use kayaks anymore now we dont own the water

I have a Camel Trophy Discovery from the 1994 event.
Those earlier events were only available on Video (pre DVD times).
The footage above is from a DVD they did summarsing the events between 1989 and 1998. There's another one called "Great Years Camel Trophy 1987-1989"
I must get those earlier videos copied onto DVD.
