GQ PTO winch oil coming out breather

Hi
I have a Safari with a PTO winch and on occasion a little bit of oil comes out the breather, the winch gearbox is not hot, is this normal?

yep normal remove breather add a hose from there up to under bonnet to a catch bottle with breather on that then refill winch you can overfill the pto abit

What kind of oil are you running in it? Ive heard the proper oil that goes in them is thick as shit

yep because they only hold less than a litre they heat up real quick thinning the oil then throws a lovely mist of oil all over ya windscreen naturally you turn the wipers on .......

Thanks guy's, nice to know it's normal. It has the thick browny/yellowy stuff in it. Might have to look at adding a breather like you said Taz. Do you have one on your Safari? If you are coming up to the Manukau winch challenge it would be good to have a look at what you have done, if thats ok?

Mine was similar, but ran to the firewall, and added filter to it

What we've done is change top breather for a pipe fitting ,Rotate end plate so the filler hole is at the top ,and replace that with a pipe fitting ,then run a hose from top hose (old breather) to a catch tank then a return line to the end plate ,the can i use is a 1 ltr which i half fill .By doing this you more than double the oil capacity and when the winch gets hot the oil cycles between the two and help cool it Just make sure the can you use has a breather also ...
