XJ Front Driveshaft

Post by Want2Retire »

Some complete knob-end (previous owner I guess) tried to remove the front driveshaft to tackle u-joint replacement (I guess, as there is a grinding noise only in 4wd that appears to speed up with acceleratiion only). Anyway, at the double carden joint it seems two of the 8mm? bolts that connect driveshaft to transfer case have been rounded. Can replacement bolts be easily sourced, or will any bolt of same size fit?

Prize for best answer :)

Cheers

Any bolt of the same size will be OK, just make sure they are the same grade as the originals.

Cheers ice. Now for silly question. How would I know, or discover the grade of the original bolts?

The only silly question is a question not asked  ...

There is a whole science here and I could type for hours but google is your friend

Basically

If it is an imperial bolt look on the end of the bolt head.

No markings - Grade 2 (weak as butter)
3 Radial Lines - Grade 5
5 Radial Lines - Grade 7
6 Radial Lines - Grade 8 (hight tensile steel)

Metric bolts are stamped with a number like 4.6, 4.8, 5.8, 8.8, 10.9 etc.

These numbers indicate the tensile strength of the bolt and basically the higher the number the stronger the bolt.

Except for OEM bolts, they often don't have markings.

Also, these bolts are too small to read any markings of off.

these what you be after http://www.offroadspecialties.co.nz/node/96 freebies are good but the problem with second hand caps ( obviously been hit by something if bolt heads are rounded) is they can stretch, they have a sort of pretension setting so may not last long, have been through all this with my TJ when the rear control arm bushes wore out and when I fed it the fat, the diff wanted to turn upside down and as a result bolt heads were clipping yokes of driveshaft.

cheers
Greg
