Macetown, Central Otago
Hi,
Organising family camping trip for January, and wanting to try Macetown out of Arrowtown. Anyone done the Macetown track that may be able to advise on track conditions etc? Have a fairly standard Cherokee XJ, and more to the point only new to 4wd'ing, just wondering if we proceed with organising trip or look for somewhere else.
Cheers
Grant

Hi
you should be ok with a Jeep. As usual with rivers if it is dirty it is a no go. If your truck is a Diesel I assume it has a snorkel.
If you are unsure of a river crossing walk it.
The track is not overly steep but as with anything like that you must be careful. Pick your passing spots if you meet another Truck.
Henry.

Hi Henry,
Thanks for the reply. Our cherokee is petrol and looking at getting a snorkel in the next few weeks. Will not attempt any crossing if water looks dirty.
Cheers

Not meaning to be a smart ass, but why assume it has a snorkel if it is Diesel?
Any engine, Petrol, Diesel, or otherwise, really needs a snorkel if dealing with river crossings at all

Hey mate, with a snorkel and a little bit of common sense you will be fine. During the summer there is a fair amount of other vehicals and cyclists head in there so be prepared to take you time. I went in 3 weeks ago for the night and had no issues (standard 96 surf). Can be a a little bumpy so let ya tires down a little too.

Hey Bob or Jim
Thanks for the info. Looking forward to going, be a change from the sticky mud that the tracks up here seem to be, at least the tracks I know about anyway.

Re: Macetown, Central Otago
at that time of year there will be heaps of traffic in and out.
You'll be sweet as in your jeep. have driven a subaru into there when the river was low. Just watch there are a couple of crossings that have some deep holes that you can fall into. But with some comon sense it'll be easy as

Initially was just me, the cook and the two kids but might have mate and his family come along also. Not worried who joins any part of trip, be good to meet some others, more the merrier.
Be warned though, be driving a jeep, and not keen on spending whole holiday waiting for toyotas and nissans to catch up

Thanks lownslow. Just google earth'd the Nevis area and looks really nice. Would there be anywhere to pitch the tent in the area that you know of? Tried to search online but not finding much.

Re: Macetown, Central Otago
Let me know when your heading down for sure as i live right above the river and can check it out for ya if not come for a drive the young fulla (mister 2) loves adventures in the truck with dad so a good excuse to get out of house work.
Re: Macetown, Central Otago
That goes for anyone heading into the area give us a heads up, if our clubs not heading anywhere you can usually convince someone pretty easy to take you for a look around.
Re: Macetown, Central Otago
Anyone know if dogs are allowed up Macetown / Arrowtown?
Looking at doing the track in Christmas holidays.

When went to go up there 4mths ago, the sign stated no dogs allowed (sign was at first river crossing), which was a PITA, as we had ours with us

I would say its just the standard DOC ass covering move.
It's far more to do with cyanide paste, bate stations, 1080 and liability, than it is to do with the "perceived" threat your pooch is to native fauna.
IMO of course

Flip dogs are baned from all the good spots! Partner did some research and got this response;

Hi Rachelle,
Thank you for your email, outside of Arrowtown you will be able to find some walks where you can take your dog eg; Lake Hayes, walk around Arrow River and a few others around Queenstown and Arrowtown. For more information about walking your dog have a look at the South Island brochure which I have attached in the link below.
http://www.doc.govt.nz/upload/documents ... island.pdf
Most of the National Parks here in Southland you won't be able to take your dog for walk. In Macetown the dogs are NOT permitted.
Permit for walking dogs in National Parks is for guiding dogs only.
For more question don't hesitate to ask.
Best regards,
Kamila

Yep. We like to take our dog everywhere, so it can be quite limiting where we go
