Hand throttle DIY ex Kenworth Truck

Post by kbushnz »

Well since putting in the manual injector pump I lost the ability to idle up.
Pain in the butt as when she's cold a bit of up idle works a treat and also charging batteries... Pain having to sit there with a foot on the gas pedal...
I started looking at hand throttles. And Slee off road in the states used to sell factory Toyota ones... but alas not stocked....
So started trolling Trademe and Ebay...
Looked at locking chokes etc etc
Even hassled a few ORE members (sorry Mudluva for not getting back to you re your factory one)
Then stumbled across a Kenworth truck one..
Image
It can be turned out and in to change idle and push button to set it back in home. Has a friction lock. And the price was right...
So set about fitting it.
Had to make a new bracket to fit it and also move over the bonnet release handle (needed to get hand throttle inline with accelerator pedal).
This is when I found the gas flap handle was broken....(fixed now).
Then it was a matter of cutting down the guide sleeve for the hand throttle and the inner wire.
I welded a small tube to the top of the accelerator arm with which the wire goes thru.
Image
It has a small clamp on the end of the wire.
The idea is normal operation sees the tube slide over the wire.

And when idle up is used you turn the knob and it pulls up on the throttle. Similar to the factory approach.

It works a treat.....

Excellent work , Very creative putting the kenworth gear to use !! Do you mind me asking what you payed for it ?!

We have a similar design on our work equipment to "up" the revs to increase the revs for the water pumps etc whilst in neutral and it has always inspired me to do something simliar for cold starts etc on my bush truck when i get to that stage if it does not sell !! Have a factory "idle up" on my diesel KZN185 and find it very handy also to start it early in the morning and let it do its thing rather than having to sit there with ya foot on pedal.

Thanks for posting this kbushnz, you come up with some fantastic ideas that im sure have got others thinking !!

Got it off Trademe....
Missed out on one a few months ago which was $1 res and went for $55 bucks. Too much IMHO.
But another came up and I scored it for $33 incl postage....

Have a hand throttle on my BJ40 - great for cold starts. But then it is old school.

Like the idea of the push button release - poor mans cruise control?

My LJ Prado did too :-)
Good result but I'm suprised you couldn't get your hands on one out of an earlier Prado, or perhaps mod a Surf one? The Surf ones are a shorter cable though and won't reach the Prado accelerator pedal. I used one to repair my hand throttle.
