Does anyone know anything about 2L-ts?

Post by Crankshaft »

Recently my beloved cruisers engine (a 2L-t) broke. It mashed a cylinder and is stuffed. Being a poor student i can't afford to replace it with a new 2L-t (or what would have been even better a 3L or 5L). I've chased down a 2L at a fairly reasonable price and am thinking of using it.

The people who i have spoken with from toyota have warned me that this will make the car MUCH more gutless, and keep trying to sell me more expensive stuff. I was wondering how true this is (the truck in question is an '86 sx5, short wheel base, so i don't think it'll weigh very differnetly from a hilux.) The difference in Hp between the engines is 14 (86 vs 72).

Another thing is was thinking of was strapping the old turbo to the 2L. The compressions are similar (20:1 and 22.3:1) so i doubt there'd be any major issues, and i could always alter the 2L by slotting in another head gasket (or so i am told). However the guy from toyota claims that the 2L is a weaker engine internally (ie thinner shafts ect). This surprises me. If anyone can support or the-opposite-of-support this please let me know.

Really, anything relevant would be most appreciated

Thank you in advance.

Ring Action 4WD in Rotorua 073482000. Ask for terry or troy and you can learn as much as you want about these engines.

And yes they are right. The 2L is a lower strength engine than the 2LT. what were you thinking buying a 2LT in the first place. They are a grenade with a loose pin.

Hi Crank,
Bad luck bout your motor...
but I have just the ticket for you :D .
My 2L is for sale!...look in the classifieds...only 200 bucks!
It has done a few k's but it goes really well. i wasn't planning to get rid of it, but a 5m ge came up so i am gonna replace it wif that...no more power worries!.
The 2L is still in the vehicle an can be heard running, if ya want to test drive be my guest.
I have driven both 2L and 2LT and didn't think the turbo had a great deal more grunt...mebbe it was a bit shagged. Ya cant beat a 2.8 supra 6cyl tho...

Cheers

Ok, you've convinced me! So long as there arn't any major problems with the engine, i'll take it.

Just name a time and place. I live in auckland, and am free whenever.

You can phone me on 4466343 or text to 0274066067 (don't phone, it wont work) or email me at carpathian_ninjapirate@hotmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks

Through reading around i've seen a fair bit on swapping out a 2L for a 5M supra engine in a hilux (Jafa for one). I was wondering if the same could be done in a cruiser, as (so far as i know) the engine, and presumably the gear box, are identical.

Actually in short my question is: Should a teenager with minimal mechanical experience even consider this swap?

If i contact enough people who have experience in the area i can probably get through it without needing to think for myself too much, and both my father and an uncle have good levels of mechanical experience. I presume that the difficulty in fitting the engine will be in solving the problems that arise, not the physical fitting, and a good portion of the problems, especially the big ones, have been solved for me.

I'm doing mechanical engineering at uni, cause this sorta thing really interests me, and theres nothing quite like jumping in at the deep end.

And it's DOUBLE the hp!

So what do you guys think?

If you've got the time to do it why not??
You gotta start some where!!
All these guys that do swaps and mods etc were not born with the knowledge :D

Yep. Do it. We have two bunderra's now rolling aorund with celica six's. They really do go well.

Always plenty of help on this site. Just start looking through the forums. Someone else has already been through all the things you need to do. Its a very simple swap. Don't think you even need to cut and paste anything.

The only warning I would give you, having run the supra donk for a while now... work out your fuel costs first!

These motors drink like an irish catholic priest! Especially pushing something big, heavy and with the aerodynamics of a brick.

If you use this every day then you will go through a lot of petrol... especially initially while playing with the extra horses :)

Not saying don't do it, I love the conversion and it transforms the truck on and offroad... but just think about how much spare cash you have for petrol... you did mention you were a broke student.

regards

Yip have to agree with that. Think I average about 6km/l!!!!! That was on 31" tyres, not to interested in working it out with the 35s. Just have to cough up for the gas and not drive it every day

I'm not going to be using the truck during the week, so i don't think the fuel price rise will hurt my finances too drastically. Still it's certainly worth thinking about.

What is the celica swap? Is that the same engine as in the supra swap?

Where would you recomend looking for an engine? I've mainly been looking on Trademe, but i've also thought about Turners auctions (the damaged cars ones especially.)

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!
